Ham Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 To me, drag chains are really helpful when drift fishing for trout. I'll always have one out anywhere it's legal. It's purchase is not to slow the boat, but rather to keep the boat parallel with the current. It is inevitable that your drag chain will hang from time to time. I added the bicycle inner tube in line to be a shock absorber for when that happens. I have fished with guys that just have a rope and been yanked off my feet when the chain hung at a higher CFS. I want a quick connect snap. I want a part of a pool noodle to make it float just in case. I want a loop to loop connection rope to inner tube. I want a single straight piece of chain. I want a bucket to carry that drag chain in to keep it from leaving a rust stain on the boat floor. snagged in outlet 3, Quillback, grizwilson and 1 other 3 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. Ham Posted July 30, 2017 Author Posted July 30, 2017 I have a low (slow) water drag Chaim that is light. i have a higher flow chain that is quite a bit heavier. i have a couple of 5 lb window weights to throw out if I leave the boat to keep the boat from blowing too far away grizwilson 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. grizwilson Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 I do the same as Ham has taught me with one exception I connect to the boat with a piece of wire that is designed to fail in the event of a catastrophic event. I have a quick connect snap at each end to allow quick change of the different chains. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein

I'm sure it does slow the boat some, but that is never my intent. Mitch f 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

It's just to keep the bow upstream without using a trolling motor. You hang it off the front of the boat so the boat is downstream of the chain.

I do my best to match the same speed of the current, as Ham and SIO3 said it keeps the boat straight and on a line for a drift rather than just meandering down the river every which direction. Plus it gives the guy in the back first cast at the new water all the time... Darn SIO3 still catches more fish than me!
