Basfis Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Anyone else catch the MLF where Poche caught his jerkbait instead of line? 2 hook points buried beyond the barb. I own some good side cutters and they aren’t in the boat. Anyone used the cutters on their needle nose like they did?
slothman Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I didn’t see MLF, but I saw it on his Facebook page. Ouch. Live always wondered how those pros avoid getting a handful of treble hooks when they lip their fish. Give me a net any day of the week. I never understood the no net rule.

I upgraded my diagonal cutters after ending up attached to a brown fish and a Yellow Magic in 2010. As the Forged in Fire guy says "they will cut". It was down in his mouth, fish chomping on it. There was no way to adequately deal with it using needle nose pliers. I used split ring pliers to get the hook off the bait, got rid of the fish, then yanked it out. Dumb, but it was out. Ham 1
Basfis Posted January 22, 2018 Author Posted January 22, 2018 I’ve been changing some hardware on baits. I might do a trial to see cut force. I’m guessing the owner stingers and mustad 2x in a #2 size will take some squeezing. Pretty sure those hooks are harder than cheap side cutters.
1farmer Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 8 inch bolt cutters are what I use. They're a lot cheaper than a good pair of diagonal pliers and will cut things diagonal pliers can't. dtrs5kprs 1

If I had to place a bet in advance, I’d bet on a stinking white bass being the fish that one day sticks me.
Gavin Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Debarb all mine. Have been stuck plenty of times but no big deal. Minor flesh wounds mostly. Pull right out, or a minor tug. grizwilson 1
Mitch f Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Use Aaron Martin trebles, the barb is very small and they come out with a little pressure. Ask Al Agnew 😜 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Al Agnew Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 Didn't see how they got it out. Don't think the string trick would work with two hook points buried; it would have been no problem with just one point buried in that spot (as long as you had a partner...doable if you're alone but not as easy. Fishing a lot of two and three treble hook lures, I've always been very careful about lipping bass, but usually manage to do so with no problem. Trick is to not be tentative...see the opportunity to grab that lower lip and do it quickly and as hard as you can grip. But sometimes it just isn't possible to do it safely. I never have carried a net in the canoe, but will be buying one for the jetboat and I might start carrying it in the canoe as well. On the North Country trip that CWC and I did last summer, where we were catching a lot of big, hot smallmouth, I finally gave up on using my walk the dog topwaters because those fish were just too hot and too strong to handle safely, and we didn't have a net.
