MrGiggles Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Shortly after I bought my current boat the thought of upgrading has been on my mind, and it looks like it could be in the cards later this summer, maybe into fall. I have a 14' Alumacraft Semi-V with a 25 Johnson. It's done everything I've asked of it and has been a great boat, but I'm looking for something a little bigger, and definitely a deep V. Something easy on gas, easy to load with one person, and easy pulling. As far as layout goes, I just want an open floor, casting deck up front, and a Livewell. I'd like a 30-40hp outboard, Yamaha preferably. Electric start, power trim is nice but not a necessity. What are some good brands and dealers to look into? I have spent some time looking at G3, Alumacraft, and Tracker. They all seem pretty decent. My budget is looking at 10k, give or take. New seems like the best option. I haven't seen much at all that meets what I want locally, mostly just flat bottoms and bass boats. -Austin
Gavin Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 The outfitter we used in Canada last year seems to be really fond of G3 Aluminum V hulls equipped wtih Yamaha F40 tiller 4 strokes. Those rocky Canadian lakes can be really tough on boats & motors and they use their equipment hard. They were quiet, and comfortable to fish out of, but I don't know the cost.
kjackson Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Crestliner is an obvious one, and so is Lund, but the sticker on the Lund may be a shock... I'm looking at Alumacraft; they are pretty good boats and less expensive than some others.
MrGiggles Posted July 9, 2018 Author Posted July 9, 2018 I did a little more playing around. Lowe, Crestliner, and Tracker only offer Mercury, so that puts them lower on the list for a package deal. The G3 Guide V167 and V150 are very attractive, but they don't show the price online. The Alumacraft Summit 165 is also a great looking boat. Makes me wonder if it would be worth it to try and buy a Lowe or Crestliner without the motor, and buy it separately. It's not like installing a tiller motor is a lot of work. -Austin
Gavin Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 We were fishing the G3 Guide 167T models up in Canada at Camp Quetico...They probably have 15 or more of them. Vinyl instead of carpet, no wind screens...Just a bare bones solid boat with lots of storage. Easy to fish 3 out of one.
rps Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 I fished from an Alumacraft 1650 Navigator tiller with a 75hp evinrude for 6 years and loved it. I only sold it because my wife insisted I get a steering wheel boat. You would love one of theirs.
jdmidwest Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 I have been in this boat several times. Some of his ideas are good. Ultimate Walleye Boat Deadstream 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
fishinwrench Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 The king of all tiller V bottom fishing boats is the old Lowe Lunker V. They were made in 14 and 16ft versions, all are built like a tank, easily customizable, and there are a bunch of them out there for sale. Nothing on them to rot or suffer from sun/rain exposure, so anything this side of a 1982 should fit the bill.
dan hufferd Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 I have a friend who owns an Alumaweld, outstanding boat no plastic, or fiberglass in that thing. It is built like a tank, he traded his Lund in on it, if that says anything. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
MrGiggles Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 I ended up getting an 84 Tracker Tournament V17 with a 60hp Merc a month ago on Facebook. It's been a project, but the price was right. It's a little longer and wider than I wanted, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Daryk Campbell Sr and dan hufferd 2 -Austin
