JestersHK Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Had a break in the hectic work schedule. Myself and 2 of my buddies from work got up in the dark and made the trek down to the creek. Got in the water just right as the sun was coming up. My buddy grew up down there and introduced me to the red ribbon section last year. We started just up from there and whether our way down to the water treatment plant. My other Co worker had never really trout fished before so we armed him with an ultralight and a white jig. We showed him the basics and he was the first one to land a fish! It wasn't long before I hooked into a pretty solid bow. Had him on for a bit but popped off about 5 feet away. I threw mostly orange and brown 3/32 pretty much all day as it was a hot color. Shortly after I lost the first fish I connected with my first of 2019. A small guy but hey he counts lol. A minute or so after that my buddy Brandon decided to be baptised... He ate it good on a rock and just about went under. It was still pretty cold and I don't think he stopped shivering till the sun finally came all the way up lol. We worked the steam pretty good, my newbie buddy took to jigging quickly and was flying solo in no time. I think we may have created a monster... I brought 8 to hand this morning and lost maybe 3 more or so. The the fly rod for a bit but they really just wanted the jigs. Man they would hit them hard when they wanted them too. Overall a great morning. Fun little stretch of steam and felt we did it well as we have no idea if they stocked it all winter. The rainbows we did catch had great color and some had really full find so they were def hold overs. Johnsfolly, BilletHead, ness and 2 others 5
Johnsfolly Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Congrats buddy! Nice report. Did you catch any around the treatment outflow? Last time I fished that creek the trout would go on a feed when the discharge started. Did you see any browns in that white ribbon section? JestersHK 1
ness Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 There's a creek we don't hear much about. Looks like you guys had a pretty good trip. I haven't been there in many, many years. May need to change that in 2019. John
JestersHK Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 We caught a few by the discharge. Didn't fish down past that. I had what I'm pretty sure was a brownie take a swipe at my jig, but we did not catch any. Johnsfolly 1
Johnsfolly Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I've caught some nice smallmouth in the red ribbon section. Only one brown trout down there. Still counted 😁. JestersHK 1

We didn't see another angler the whole time we were there either. My buddy was second guessing all the way down as he was afraid there would not be any fish in there, but we found fish in all the places you expect to find them. We almost stopped at Meramec instead but glad we did not. The stream was teeming with bait fish and suckers as well. Shad and "bait" as I call them were all over the place. Johnsfolly and ness 2
Gavin Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Will fish it occasionally for brown trout & smallmouth but would not call it destination water. Good fall back if the Gasconade turns to mud.
