patlock, what do you think of the set up you have, it is exactly what I have decided to get for the Champion. As far as your SI transducer, did you have to go with the Transducer Shield &  Saver  spring back bracket on your rig or were you able to use the shield and wedge on the set back or jack plate?

I have a hummingbird 728 and 798 on my boat (Basscat Cougar). Yep there old like me. Don’t even know where to start with all the choices and options available. Would like to stay around $2000 for the pair. Any thoughts on the Lowrance ti2?  Only concern is that LONG transducer. I don’t care if it is a Ford or Chevy. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

well what did you end up with, we need a review,

I have 10 inch Helix G2ns front (DI) and rear (SI) all networked to an Ulterra (not to be confused with the Ultrex).  All really works well and you can control the troller with either locator.  The images are very sharp and Humminbird has a Max Mode feature button that shows all the data without filtering or interpreting anything.  If you can find the G2 stuff it is allot cheaper and for inland lake stuff there is really no difference with the new G3 stuff as the only thing is an additional frequency for ocean type depths.  I've had no trouble with any Humminbird unit and have had them back to the 700 and 900 series.  I would have liked to try the Lowrance units but they are not 100% compatible with MinnKota.  I also find the Helix easy to use but again I've gotten use to them.  I do note that they seem  to offer frequent software upgrades that I rarely do as they are for the most part not necessary.

Well, may have messed up. Wife read everybody’s comments, so now it is wait till after ICast, see who has the best sale and get the biggest screen you can within your budget. Dang, she keeps getting wiser and wiser. Wouldn’t expect less after 48 years living with me!!

Thanks everyone for all the great information.

One good selling point of the Garmins is they come preloaded with like 17,000 lakes with contours.  And they have the map maker function where you can build your own contours (although I think others have that functionality now too).

Humminbird has (or had) that map maker function.  Pretty neat for small lakes that don't make it on the mapping apps.  But, if you're going to build a map using that feature it will take a long time to do it on anything over about 50 acres.

I tried it out on one small cove on Council Bluff lake and it worked really well.  But you are right, it took a while to get the whole cove using a trolling motor and it was only about a 300' long cove.

For me Garmin is the only way to go. The livescope is unreal. Garmin also has the mapping ability Jeff was taking about. There has to be a reason a lot of the big boys are switching to garmin. I know several of the pros who claim the livescope is cheating. I'd say the same thing if I was sponsored hummingbird or lowrance.
