I would be excited to catch a skate or ray.  I really thought it was a ray, have to look up skate.

I'm hoping to catch a cownose ray this summer. I snagged one two summers ago and it got off. They are a powerful fish. I want to have one hooked properly and land it. We think that Livie hooked one back in mid June but broke her line.

Have never had skate, but rays are pretty tasty. Similar to scallops.

I remember reading an article years ago where people where cutting disks out of ray wings and selling them as scallops.  Scallops are tasty, if ray wings are similar they would be worth keeping.

Just has to be a large enough ray to have thick filet meat. I'm willing to try it. As well as skate. I saw a program where a guy kept skates and ate the wing meat. Skate was about 2 to 2 1/2 times larger than these guys. Not sure how easy it would be to land one that size from the beach. Boating one would be some what easier once you got it off the bottom.

Sounds like an excellent day.  I would be excited to catch a skate or ray.  I really thought it was a ray, have to look up skate.  Never heard of that.  How did you release the hook? Needle nose I guess.  I wouldn't know how to handle such a thing.

I've only caught a couple of rays and neither were fun to deal with. Not that I regret it either.
