MOPanfisher Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 The best spaghetti squash I ever grew were olunteers that cam up in my compost pile. I let them go and grow, ended up losing a sizeable chunk of yard I culdnt mow, but got something like 40 of them off the vines. A few years ago it was acorn squash. Right now the strawberries have fired their last shot, am working on curing the tops back as they are already putting out runners. Fair amount of jam in the freezer and ate a LOT of fresh strawberries. Terrierman 1
Fish24/7 Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Want fuzzy blooms? Heck yeah! Adding extra P and K nutrients early in the growth stage will guarantee you the healthiest tomato flowers Lillies are prime! Planted some new ones last Fall, they are about to open soon, forgot what colors they are though 😆
Fish24/7 Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Marigolds have doubled in size this past week, still tiny seedling stage. Zinnias are about 6" tall now. Will be planting more of those seeds soon. Butterflies love em and they are easy to grow. Watermelons are doing ok, slow growing, but healthy.
Terrierman Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 It's not going to be long before I have zucchini and yellow crook neck squash running out my ears. Tomatoes are doing good too, lots of blooms but still have not spotted any fruit.
Quillback Posted June 7, 2020 Posted June 7, 2020 Well the brussels sprouts look to be a bust, got a couple of handfuls out of 6 plants, noticed today that they are under attack from some kind of small bug. I don't think the temp being turned up to 95 helped them either. Broccoli is done also, but I expected it to be by now, it did well this spring. Tomatoes are way behind. Squash, cukes, and melons starting to take off. Terrierman 1
rps Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Patio cherry tomatoes have many blossoms but no small fruits yet. Bush cucumbers are in mid stage blossom. Peas are pulled up and second wave cherry tomatoes are about three inches tall. 😃 Quillback and Terrierman 2
Terrierman Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 Tied up the cherry tomatoes that are in the cattle waterer planter. Suckered the ones in the earth. Fed them with miracle grow for tomatoes. Put down crushed oyster shells before planting to assure plenty of calcium and magnesium. Been hoeing nearly every day, it's a never ending thing to keep that spot weed and grass free. But overall looking good. I actually watered yesterday. Amazing how fast it can dry up. Quillback 1
ness Posted June 8, 2020 Posted June 8, 2020 I've got 10 tomato plants going. Tallest is about 5 feet tall. Smallest is about 10-12 inches. That little sucker has looked weird almost from the start. It's supposed to be a Black Krim but it's either mislabeled or just a bum plant -- the other one I bought that same day looks great. The little one's getting crowded out by the ones surrounding it, but that silly thing has a single tomato on it, which is lying on the ground. Gonna let nature take it's course on that one. Lost about ⅔ of my last gooseberry bush last winter. Took a living branch and have it rooting in a pot. It's actually got gooseberries on it. Will probably cut it off from the mother plant soon. When I checked about a month ago the roots were doing nicely. Terrierman, BilletHead and Quillback 3 John
Fish24/7 Posted June 10, 2020 Posted June 10, 2020 Ground is nice and soft now after Cristobal. Easier to dig in this mountaintop dirt so I went ahead and put a couple more maters in today. Wind didn't tear up too much, just kinda twisted a few leaves on the plants. Using a new razor blade I went around to all the maters and removed the first couple sets of leaves closest to the ground. Most buggy type critters won't climb the vine due to the hairy trichomes , but they will hop on a leaf low to the ground if given the chance, and they say dirt splashed on the leaves during watering or rains can cause problems. Mulch helps with preventing that too. So they get the chop. It's about time to apply a natural fungicide to get a jump on Summer diseases.👍 My one and only volunteer cocktail tomato is growing like crazy putting on as much as 3"-4"a day on all the upper branches! Survived 2 hard freezes, and transplant stress due to half the roots pulling off when the dirt separated at the base of the vine when I dug it up. Will for sure be saving the seeds! ness and Terrierman 2
