Gavin Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 150 looks like the max for a 30-30. Deer are pretty stupid though. If you are not set up for a 20-30 yard shot, you are just hoping and shooting...Kill em anyway you can though. Land Carp!
oneshot Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 My 30-30 is sighted in for 100 yards. My Shotgun with Slugs is sighted in for 50 yards. My Inline Muzzleloader is sighted in for 100 yards. My Sidelock Muzzleloader is sighted in for 50 yards. My Crossbow is sighted in for 20-60 yards. oneshot
dan hufferd Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I don't have a 30 30 anymore, but I wish I did, my longest kill was about 120 over the creek and through the woods in the snow, I dropped a small sapling right over the kill zone. I fell in the creek on the way out, dragging the deer with one hand, and carrying my rifle with the other. I filled the action on my old marlin 30 30 with water. Anyway now I live in the wide open, I shoot faster and longer. It is not uncommon to take a coyote or crow around 300, but I am not shooting a 30 30, and I make my own rounds. If I remember right you can zero a 30 30 at 25 yrds and the next time it crosses that line of sigh is at 256 yrds or something like that?? I would wager that the 30 30 and the 22lr have put more meat on the table than any other round, aside from a black power caliber of some kind. nomolites and Johnsfolly 2
Flyfisher for men Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Check out Hornaday's leverevolution ammo on their website. If you are not familiar with it, the bullets have rubberized tips that allow you to use the pointed bullets in a tubular magazine. If memory serves, the 160 grainers run something like 3" high at a 100 yards and dead on at 200 yards. dan hufferd 1

It's still worth a look, since you are still likely to greater velocities than other factory ammo, based on load data I've seen. The powder formulation plays into it, too. It is a bit more expensive, and that might not be worth it if you're only taking shots at 100 yards.
