We just replaced our old HVAC with a high efficiency heat pump with propane backup. My days of burning wood are done and I doubt I miss it.

Having the "luxury" of not needing to cut wood, but being able to cut it if you want.to or enjoy it is fabulous.  I have found that I have no shortage of people who are willing to take wood that I cut, and lately they have been wanting/willing to come.over and mow or do stuff for me, in this case karma is a very sweet lady who sends over casseroles.

I am probably going to need to replace both HVAC units at my house, they are right at 30 yrs old and beginning to be more maintenance heavy and failure prone.  The newer units are a lot more efficient, there is always a part of me that wants to do stuff like ground source or solar panels but just haven't made that jump yet.

I'm ground source and it's great.  Thinking about solar but haven't made that jump yet either.

We are in an electric CO-OP and our budget billing each month is $100/month.  I ran the calculator for my house and it was around $18K for the system after subsidies. It would take15 years for me to break even.  Baring any additional cost maintaining a 15 year old system.

I am not done with the chainsaw and axe.  I enjoy swinging the axe and the novelty of lighting a fire indoors just does not go away.

We ended up going with a high end American Standard Platinum air source system since it was a retrofit. If we ever build a new house then we will probably go with ground source. Our place was pretty cheap to heat and cool on the old system so I don't expect we'll be saving all that much with the new system over all. Our decision was based more so on the financing terms (0% for 72 months) and comfort level that it would provide versus going with a lower end system. The home is a lot more comfortable now that the air is constantly circulating at low speeds instead of being off or blowing full speed like on the old system.

Still kicking around the Firewood thing it would give me more exercise and the trees are there. Plus I have the stuff to cut it.
