Bgctrading Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 I have been catching several Bass the last day or two throwing swimbaits and ned rigs on gravel. I have located a lot of Bass in a cluster of trees in 20 fow about 10 ft down. Swim baits and neds seem to get hung up before I can get down to the fish. Any suggestions on a method to get after these fish? Drop shot maybe?
Members NebSchmidty Posted May 15, 2020 Members Posted May 15, 2020 Unless it's calm enough that I can keep the boat pretty stationary and feel my way through any limbs, I tend to get a lot of hangups fishing an open drop shot hook within submerged trees. YMMV. One thing I'll use up here if I'm targeting fish suspended in thicker timber is a senko on of those weighted wacky rig jigs w/ a weedguard. You can keep it a fairly vertical presentation and it seems to roll over limbs reasonably well. For whatever reason, I generally have better luck with a 4" than a 5" worm when rigged this way. Or maybe a weighted, t-rigged fluke if you need more of a swimming presentation?
dtrs5kprs Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Will they come up for topwater? If not, a stupid rigged tube comes through a lot of wood. A senko on a 1/16oz shakey head is good in trees too. We deal with this on a couple of favorite points up the White from Kimberling every year. It's a bear, but worth it if you can deal with the hang ups. 3/4oz swing head was good to us on the last summer trip, and we caught some there last week. Just not bunches yet.
Bgctrading Posted May 15, 2020 Author Posted May 15, 2020 I'm going try to drag a topwater across them if this rain ever moves out. dtrs5kprs 1

Ealy Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Try counting down (A couple of seconds) and then slow reeling that swimbait or a smoke grub on a 1/4 oz he’d with your rod tip held up about 10 o’clock. I’m not a fan of Texas rigged, belly-weighted swimbaitS myself. You should be able to get most of your baits back if you do hang up. I’d also be trying a Jerkbait, Redfin, or Spook. mixermarkb and Quillback 2

What jighead or style do you prefer to stupid rig your tubes? I use the little bass pro tender tubes a lot and have issues with fish gut hooking every once in awhile or getting hung up. I don't feel like the ones with a weed guard have helped my issues much. If I can set up a stupid tube correctly though I may use that more often.

If I can set up a stupid tube correctly though I may use that more often. I use a ball style shakey head. We pour them without the screw lock, and with an EWG style Mustad hook, specifically for the stupid tube. Might not work with a Tender Tube. We run them with flip tubes, generally. Easiest way to rig it is to just make a slit on what will be the bottom of the tube, put the head in and through, and super glue it in and shut. Then TX rig the hook. We also use wire guard heads on our tubes. Those hook up a little better than the stupids. Fish will eat a tube all the way to their tail, especially as you get into post spawn in May and June. Maybe the worst of all baits about that. Only thing close is a split shot with a doctor or fry. Quillback, Hunter53, Seth Clarkson and 1 other 4
