Making the line hold dirt makes the line wear faster so we get to buy a new line sooner, those marketing types are on it.

Something old timers put on fly lines to make them slick and cast well.  Last modern dressings were made out of silicone deposits.  Older dressings were secret concoctions of material to make silk flylines go their distance and float.

Dunno, I just clean my fly lines after I fish, they seem to last. All SA lines. Have some silk fly lines that require drying and a coat of Red Tin Mucullin before and after use. Super thin diameters on the silk lines,, and they do cast great.
