I've caught Smallmouth Buffalo on flies.  Not easy.  This fish seem like an outlier....

Based on your research, how would you ID this fish?

Dave just based upon a quick look at the mouth position, seeming lack of a dorsal keel, and body shape, I would consider this as a possible black. Again only a 30 sec assessment. More research and measurements needed to confirm.

Somebody’s hands are in the way but, the fish seemed too short to be a Black Buffalo.

I'll buy that.  Its overall body shape didn't match the other Sm Buffs I'd caught.

I washed my hands just looking at these...😂

They are kind of pretty with the bluish tint to their lower sides.  That last pictures was one I caught under a foam-covered eddy...there was some fish eating up under the foam, so I put the fly in the foam.  Something eventually ate the fly...a bottom-feeder!

Assuming that you are talking about my photo. I would agree this was not a long fish, maybe 14 inches or less in length.

Talking about both of your pictures of those nasty things😂  I've caught many but never touch them intentionally..
