I love living in the St. Louis Burbs, and love to visit the Ozarks. Truth be told...if I had $5-8M to spare I'd be living on the beach in Bonita Springs, FL.

I've had two buddies go live in florida for several months trying to decide where to retire and both returned.  They couldn't afford waterfront like they dreamed of.

I cant afford the big beach house either. I could get a small place on a canal with a boat lift, ocean access, and a pool, no problem. If you want the big beach house, just rent one for a week. Most of them sit vacant most of the time, and it's much cheaper than owning one.

VRBO, baby. No worries, no maintenance, change as often as you like.

We’re going to the keys next February.

Are you driving or flying?   We drove and went across the Everglades.  I believe that there are over 50 bridges one crosses getting to Key West.

We haven't decided yet.  My wife's sister has a house in Ft Myers with a yukon we can use.  We might fly in there and drive over.  We have plenty of time and are in no hurry.

Is the canal fishing on the west coast as good as the east?

Yes it is. Mostly Snook & tarpon, sometimes some cobia, pompano & seatrout. It sucks on the back side of Sanibel/Ft Myers area because of all the pollution coming down the Caloosahatchee out of Okeechobee. Points north and south of the poison plume are still very good.
