MNtransplant Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 If I want to mount a trolling motor on my kayak does that mean i need to register it in Missouri? Or does the change per body of water? Does a trolling motor bring any other rules into play about lighting needed? Boaters/captains license? Thanks!
fishinwrench Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Technically you're supposed to, but plenty don't. An officer would have to be a genuine hardass to write you up for it. If you're out late in the evening or after dark you DEFINITELY need to be lit up. License or not. Everybody needs to take the boaters safety course, no exceptions. If you haven't done it then you should want to.
tjm Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 I was told that both my canoe and the trolling motor had to be titled and registered if I did that. Even rigging a sail on my canoe would require registration because it's over 12'. I think it's a way to collect taxes.
Ranger520vx Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Trolling motors don’t have to be registered in Mo. any more. tjm 1
jdmidwest Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Our new breed of Water Patrol would probably write a ticket. They were out at local Conservation Area this fall trying to ticket the duck hunters that were putting motors on MDC provided boats. Dutch Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 This is what I found. Missouri Kayaking Laws – Missouri law considers kayaks and canoes to be non-mechanically propelled vessels. ... Motorized Kayak Registration – All mechanically propelled vessels must be titled and registered with the Missouri Department of Revenue. This includes a trolling motor on a canoe or kayak. snagged in outlet 3 1

That sounds like what I was told a few years ago. (along with the motor at that time)
Ranger520vx Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 Pretty sure what that means is a canoe or kayak with any motor has to be registered even if it’s just a trolling motor doesn’t mean the trolling motor has to be registered as far as I know Missouri done away with registering trolling motors quite awhile back.
