jdmidwest Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Have not tied a wet fly in years. Closest I come anymore is a soft hackle. Those wings are tricky to get laying right. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
fishinwrench Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 My ex-FIL had an old Navy survival kit that had a few flys in it. A black gnat wetfly and a yellow wolly-worm, both had red tails, and some silk line. The oddest thing in the kit was a wooden matchbox with 3 little brass rings in it that had sharp edges on one side. Any idea what that would have been for? He had no idea what their intended purpose was, but he had seen a guy use them once to close a bad cut (in lieu of stitches).
tjm Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 I was given the fishing part of a survival kit once a long time ago, nothing really but a curiosity thing, but the flies looked like in the video and were poorly constructed, first fish would have mangled them, I think. Several survival kits listed here Interesting that some contain condoms. But also interesting is that some kits had gold coins and gold rings that could in theory be used to buy safety.

jdmidwest Posted February 9, 2022 Posted February 9, 2022 All the ones I have used swell up and get bigger like a balloon. You can pack a coin size one, not lubricated, and have something to collect a pint or so of water.
