Johnsfolly Posted March 31, 2022 Author Posted March 31, 2022 I have some time to catch up on our last fishing trip (saves you from having to read more about solar and wind power 🙄) which was last Sat. With rain forecasted for this evening that may have been our last trip in March. I was dusting off my list of fish caught in Maryland. Yes I keep a list of freshwater/brackish fish caught in Maryland and that should not be a surprise to any OAF guys that know me 😅. There are ca. 128 species on that list. Looking at it I noticed that I still had not caught a carp in Maryland. I know that I put Livie on them a couple of years ago to make up for not netting her carp she caught in AR and it getting away before getting a photo. Livie has been wanting to try for snakehead and I knew the spot to try for both. @Quillback it was a tributary of the Little Blackwater river that flows into the Blackwater reserve. We pass a couple of guys at the first access and there were two already at this one fishing for snakeheads. It was a cold and blustery day. There were small but persistent rain showers blowing in frequently between brights sky moments. Livie was throwing a frog and I had a high/low rig with nightcrawlers. Livie was having no luck but I got a bite not long after making my first cast. Set the hook and landed my first brown bullhead of the year 😄. Next cast I missed two bites but hooked into my first carp on the next cast. Check the box on carp 😄! I caught another but this one had some bigger shoulders than the first and even pulled drag while getting it into the net. Livie didn't even get any follows or attempted bites and she took over the bait rod. I fished a swimbait around the banks and brush. thought that I might have had one bite but no hooks sets. Livie landed another carp. Going back to a previous discussion about possible effects of snakeheads, we have caught white perch in this area before and now only caught catfish and carp. I had a few more locations to try so we headed out. The next spot was where I had fished previously for banded sunfish and caught my first and only redfin pickerel. The water level was higher, there was less vegetation (still coming out of winter) and more flow than those previous trips. We fished for close to an hour with microtrout magnet jigs and tiny redworm pieces. We saw three fish only and could not id them. No bites and we moved onto a spot I hoped to get into more white perch using our remaining bloodworms. We ended up at Byrd park in the town of Snow Hill MD that sits on the banks of the Pocomoke river. This river gets a decent perch run and a shad run later in April. So it was worth the shot. The wind was now pretty steady and cold. We were only at this spot about 45 mins. I caught a tiny blue cat and Livie a slightly bigger channel. I had originally intended to hit one last spot to do a little night fishing, but chilled to the bone we left and had dinner on the way home. nomolites, Quillback and Daryk Campbell Sr 3
Quillback Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 Well looks like it is time to quit calling them just snakehead and now call them the "elusive snakehead". Good to see you out fishing, beats work! 😃 Getting the same kind of weather here today, windy, cold, forecast I saw said we might even get a few snow flurries this afternoon. Grrrr..... Johnsfolly 1

Quillback Posted April 2, 2022 Posted April 2, 2022 Caught a few of these dudes yesterday here in Bella Vista. 2.8 Keitch on a 3/16 oz head. Got me thinking the small swimbaits might work for the elusive snakehead. Johnsfolly, nomolites, Daryk Campbell Sr and 1 other 4
