You have the right idea, just keep tying and working on technique - it takes a bit when working with hair to develop the right feel for measuring and wrapping.  There is no substitute for practice - see what works and what doesn’t.  I just recently got bored and stripped all my “doesn’t’ ties(and there were a “few”) with a straight razor and recovered the hooks for future efforts.
