I'll mess with it in the morning. but cleaning out the anti-reverse piece will be a chore. lots of little springs on that thing. sounds like maybe I should just clean it all again with the acetone, re-oil the bearings, and then grease up the gears. but I might try another grease this time. I was thinking maybe like a multi-purpose automotive grease. what do you guys think? I know the Reel Butter is made for this stuff but man, it just seems too thick, and I've lost confidence in it. In other applications you should grease bearings and oil gears right?
DADAKOTA Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 After cleaning the bearing I put it on a small screw driver and hit it with a can of compressed air to dry the bearing. Then I put a small drop of rocket fuel on it and spin to spread the oil.

Reel butter will also turn black with time and harden.
Bushbeater Posted June 30, 2022 Posted June 30, 2022 Don't try to disassemble the anti reverse bearing. I comes out as a unit, just rinse with solvent. Soak the other bearings overnight and dry and oil. One drop.

Any chance the bearings are shot altogether and even re-oiling wont work? I got busy today and didnt get a chance to tear down again. but I think i'll try the suggestion about rinsing the anti-reverse with a solvent. as for grease, i'm really tempted to use a synthetic automotive multi-purpose.

I doubt that the bearings are ruined. I have a couple of dozen Shimano reels some of which are over 20 years old and still have original bearings. There are lots of reel grease brands on the market. Ardent is the only one that I have had that turned and hardened. Just don’t get a spray grease many contain acetone which could be bad on synthetic gears. I’d not use it on the anti reverse either. grizwilson 1
