In what would appear to be a repeat of my last trip to Montauk, the usual group of wife Susie, buddy Pike and I took a day trip to Montauk. Little brother and his wife had been in the park camping since Monday. He hasn't fly fished a bunch so thought it would be a good time to fish with him and help him a little. Started in the campground and started catching some decent stockers. I had checked the lunker board and saw where several good fish had been caught so wasn't expecting the brown I lost to be available and we never saw it. After several hours and quite a few fish, we went back to brother's camper for lunch. Pike  did catch and release a nice rainbow that might have been close to 3#. After lunch we headed to the fly zone to Hudson"s corner and finished off the day in that long stretch of water. It was full of fish and we managed to catch a lot of fish there. Brother had somehow messed up his ultralight fly reel so  I brought a spare for him to use the next couple days. Haven't got a morning report from him today but hopefully he has a good morning. We were encouraged by the number of fish in the fly zone and some better quality fish from the last time.

Fished below the park beginning of August down to Baptist and caught the heck out of them on hoppers. Never saw another fisherman either. Love that area.

When I regularly fished the Current, I wouldn't even fish above Tan Vat and not very often between Tan Vat and Baptist. I was an admitted brown trout snob 🙄. Always found the browns or at least the bigger ones downstream of Baptist and more often much further downstream. There is so much good water in the upper Current. Miss fishing there. When we do get back to MO there's never enough time to fish my old haunts. So I live vicariously through you guys 😉

So throw up some photos in these posts 😁

I didn't take any pics but I agree with your sentiment! It's such a beautiful area.

Let me know if you know this spot. (A decades old photo and not one of my photos. From a guide service of a spot I fished many times).

Current river honey hole.jpg

At one time I caught my heaviest brown fishing a F11 handpainted rapala that I jerked and drifted from upcurrent just in front of the bluff on teh left while standing at the base of that tree on the right. There was (probably still is) an undercut at that upper corner of the bluff. I had a decent brown come out from the undercut and follow the bait. Then a fattie came out from that undercut and torpedoed the bait. Was just 18 inches and just over three pounds. Looked like a football. I will admit that was back in the days when I kept some brown trout and that fish did ride home with me 🙄. It had two suckers in it's gut.

Yeah, I know that spot well.  Its hardly a secret spot, but this photo and your accompanying story should probably kept to a smaller audience than this board will allow.

Why not, been fished out a long time ago and they forget to restock it.

Back in the 90's, I used to drive up and fish the upper Current at least 2 or 3 times a month.  Gas was cheap, I had lots of free time before the kids.  The park was something that I always did during the mid day.  Mornings and evenings were on the river.
