Members T.J. Clarke Posted January 24, 2023 Members Posted January 24, 2023 Monday has become my favorite C&R day at Bennett. Light crowds are nice. Mixed it up with a 1980 fiberglass rod, and a 1960s automatic reel. Have a lot of fun whenever it is used. Topped off the vintage day by catching one at the spot I caught my very first trout in 1971, slightly downstream from the large handicap area (just below dam). Fishing was good, stream clearing up nice for now, lots of fish holding below fast water, levels normal, few people, a lot of activity at the hatchery. FishnDave, BilletHead, nomolites and 4 others 7
fishinwrench Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 As long as you weren't throwing a "mop fly"......I dig it. Hope you spanked them 👍
BilletHead Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 I made a post where I did this last summer. I now own four vintage glass rods and a new glass Redington butter stick. I am up to 8 vintage automatic fly reels. It's a fun hobby and another deal to add to the fishing arsenal. What a hoot! T.J. netboy Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 I recently resurrected an old 4wt Shakespeare Wonder Rod that my Dad used when we fished at Bennett Spring back in the late 50's. It is very lightweight and has great action and lots of fun to fish with. I replaced the guides and covered the old cork with heat shrink tubing. Here is a pic... nomolites, trouty mouth, BilletHead and 3 others 6

tjm Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 I own (by guess) <25 old 'glass fly rods and <40 old reels. I don't use the auto's very often because in my memory those were used with bait. I kinda have a collection of Medalists accumulated and a dozen or so Sal Trout spring & pawl reels. I fish 'glass 95% of the time. All my tackle is "vintage" as am I. BilletHead 1

netboy Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I didn't save the one automatic I had as a kid. Too darn heavy. That said, the Wonder Rod is surprising light with a 4wt Chinaman reel.
fishinwrench Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I had a 8'6" Fenwick 6wt. when I was a kid. It was a really sweet rod. Wish I still had one. My first "Bass rod" was an Eagle claw 7'6" 7wt. that had red shrink tubing holding the guides on, and a Cortland 7wt.level line. Bought at the local True value hardware store. That thing was like casting a chainsaw.....but it did get the job done.
