I got setup for that a few years ago planning on Dale Hollow smallmouth but it didn't happen.   I've caught crappie,  carp, drum, and cats on it but no bass.

Not familiar with the term so did a web search. That looks a lot like what many people call fly fishing, a jig under a suspension device. Maybe the key to what one catches is jig size and depth?

Jig sizes and types vary.  I’ve used many different ones including some custom made by the late Turner Jones

Depending on Shad size the best is probably the Spro Phat Fly in 1/16th.

As far as depth or leader length, a lot of this depends in rod length. I have tried and tried and tried to make a slip float work and just cannot get it to work, so I have one rod that is 12’ another that is 14’.

When both pre and post spawn fish are staging suspended in the 15’ to 25’ range a leader of 15’ of 4pound carbon line is perfect.

I never go bigger than the 1/16th. oz fly and at times I will fish 1/32ed. and 1/64th.  If you try to use heaver line the bait looks like it’s on a well rope.
4 lb. Seems to be perfect with the correct fall rate and with the big rods and a high quality reel with top flight drag you can catch enormous fish on the 4 lb.

I’ve had one double digit on TR and it came on the floater. Beck had one and a young client also had one. Big fish will not only eat a 10 oz. Glide Bait but also a 1/64th. oz. Fly.
