When I was a kid, me and my dad caught a bunch of those things.  We took them back to the place we were staying and tried to clean them, when we cut into them, they stunk, I mean really stunk.  We did not try and eat them.  I'll be curious to hear what you think of them should you eat one.

There are 2 types of saltwater catfish on the Gulf coast...Gafftopsail and hardhead. The Gafftops are great eating, the hardheads are not.

First one is Gafftopsail second one is a hardhead

Ok got the first one.

They have super shrap spines. Fresh water ones I break off the spines should have done it with these.

I got a little stick in my hand and stomach but my Son got stuck good in the hand.  It is very infected.

Shrimp were out of season so I got some frozen ones, Bait Shop told me to just hook them on a heavy Jig.

I couldn't keep up with 3 Rods went to 2.

We still bought 20 pounds of Shrimp and 20 pounds of Crawdads.

I had a smallish gafftop flip while unhooking and bury two spines in my hand ONCE; those things are barbed and carry some painful venom.  I did the fdance for a bit and my hand throbbed for hours.  I had my grandkids with me so I smiled the whole time……

Our Son thinks he is healing but still tender.

Should have done them like I do Fresh Water ones I take break them off when I first catch them. I had a table about Waist high right by me on the Boat, had Water where I could wash things down.

Guy told us if we come back we can have the Boat free because we had troubles.

Me and my wife are thinking about driving straight down there.  It is 12 hours but really thinking of just getting a house and fish from shore.

Those hard heads will give you a nasty poke. I had one get the meat of my palm and it was sore for a good week or so.  Watch for other signs of infection.  They are nasty fish.  Sail fins as net boy pointed out are the ones you want to eat.
