It’s a 5’ 9” 3wt fiberglass White River CGR. I thought it would be a challenge to cast but it actually casts very nice. Especially for these small creeks. Well worth the $79 price tag. Plus I had a $50 gift card.

I bought it to terrorize the gills but these little bass decided to give it a workout.

3wt. setups are great fun, but you have to pick your days, because the slightest breeze can put you out of business.

I had a 3pc. 7'6" 3wt. Orvis rod that I loved to use for bluegill, but it was a rare day that I could cast it accurately.   I finally broke down and sold it to a guy that bluelines for trout.    A 5wt. is my lower limit anymore.

There was a pretty stiff breeze on a little MDC lake yesterday but I didn’t have to hit any targets. On most of the creeks a 5 wt 9 ft is way too much. Small waters, small fish most of the time. I don’t care if it ever sees a trout. Only time it would have a chance is during catch and release season.

I have the 6’6” 4 wt and love it for fishing dries and other small stuff especially in tight quarters.

     Nice looking rod Ronnie,

I love to switch up fly rods. Today I tried a new one. Bought it last October at the home waters fly fishing deal on the Niaunga. An 8'6wt fiberglass Reddington butterstick. We went to Lamar city lake and caught lots of bluegill. Kept 9 of those a 9.5 redear and a 10.5 crappie. It got really windy but it was fun. This butterstick will be in the fly rod rotation from now on.

I’ve dreamed of a 6 foot 6 weight for years. Maybe glass is the way to go for that.

I almost went that direction. I had it in my head that the 3 wt line and reel were going to be too much for the one I got and I was close to going with the 4 wt. But for some reason I just had to fish that short rod. Probably need a smaller reel but the line worked out perfectly for launching flies way bigger than what was intended.

One of my favorite rods is the first one I built-- a 7'6" Orvis Fullflex glass rod for a 5 weight. Not only did that rod do small flies and waters well, but it was more than adequate on bigger browns in the Clark Fork near Missoula. I ran across the slightly heavier version-- same length but in a 6--at a garage sale and liked the way it cast. Now, I'm in the process of stripping the old guides off the 5 and will be using it soon. All I need is to find a good bluegill spot close to home.
