I've never been in or even seen a jet boat, except from a distance. I get the basic idea, but this conversation has gotten me curious to see what this all looks like. Googling hasn't helped. Where is this intake on the hull and what does the output, which I assume is at the stern, look like? Where's the motor?

Mine is a 90 hp outboard.   That grate is at the bottom and squats it out the nozzle in the back.

              Just what snagged showed above. Ours is a 40 hp at the output/pump. Pat and I will have a slower ride and crash or strand ourselves than snagged will. 🤣  Jetboat rides are available but wear your  depends. It can get pretty dicey and don't like riders to have an accident in the boat.

     @fishinwrench,

    We need your opinion on the polycarbonate jet foot and what do you think of this guy's answer to fixing the grates?

Thanks, that helps. Just like a regular outboard but for that lower unit I guess. It’s more compact than I was envisioning.

Yep.  They swap out the lower unit with a jet pump.   It runs on plane in about 3”.  Drifts about 5”.  Best fishing item I have ever bought.  It’s been great. I bought it because the closest river fishing to my house needed a jet boat.   I used to drive 2-4 hours to trout fish but wanted something closer to home.   Now I prefer smallie fishing over trout.  Even though I’ve fly fished for trout my whole life.  62 years old now.  The added fun of running a shallow river in jet boat only adds to it.  And I use it at Taneycomo and The White to trout fish.

So am I right in thinking smaller gravel and other stuff just goes through the grate and shoots out the back? And eventually you'd need to clean/file/straighten/whatever the impeller part too?

Yep, pretty much.

And, this time of year, leaves are a beech with the big vacuum cleaner on the back.  Especially on my little 25 hp Merc  that I have on  for the restricted waters like 11 pt.

I have a stick steer setup, I drive from the front.  Its like flying a plane at the tree line watching for stumps, snags, and rocks.

When the jet unit kisses the stream bed, it sucks up rocks into those grates and they disrupt the vortex into the impeller.  You loose power, have to pull over and work those rocks out.
