Sat down to tie up a dozen more and discovered that the white that I used was FLUORESCENT WHITE. Oh No! my "fluorescent white" tail is all used up. I have 4 full, and gorgeous, WHITE tails. Do I take a chance that regular WHITE is fine? Oh hell to the NO! So, had to order a pair of FLUORESCENT WHITE deer tails.....and of course while I'm ordering stuff I probably should get more 6/0 thread and I can never have too many 1/40th lead dumbbell eyes, ect. And WOAH, hooks are on sale until after Christmas! Grand total for 2 deer tails=176.78 This is how we end up with cases full of $#!t, and then later wonder why ! When I read this, I started to twitch. Fluorescent white? I don't have any fluorescent white! I need... but then I wondered about the fluorescence...could the tail have been treated to reflect UV? Was that part of the dye process? If the fluorescent white turns out to be the secret to that pattern's success, and if that buck tail does reflect UV, then it opens a whole can of worms. Back when I was writing for a trade magazine, I did a piece on the response to UV by fish, and it gets complicated quickly with different life stages of various fish species responding differently to UV reflectance. In some cases, some fish can see UV and in some cases use it to determine whether or not they will eat whatever. It's kind of a big deal in salmon and associated species, but not much has been researched in other fish. It is possible that the fluorescent white buck tail does reflect UV, and it could really be the trigger for Wrench's success with this fly. so it's possible that fly tyers need to start using more UV materials in our region. That means we need to buy more materials... sigh. And I probably need to place an order. BilletHead and Daryk Campbell Sr 2

After the Wrench post I went into the tying room and grabbed my UV cure light, Hit my bucktails and yes some have the UV fluorescent glo. None of my white bucktails do and I catch lots of fishes on white belly Clouser minnows. Gosh I would probably catch a whole lotta more fishes with UV white. 🤪I will continue to use my own tails as a byproduct from hunting. UNLESS some geneticist creates a UV deer. fishinwrench Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Well it's a brighter white, no denying that. And now I have it in my head that it makes a difference in low light conditions.
kjackson Posted December 2, 2023 Author Posted December 2, 2023 "Brighter" whites, generally stand out because they've been punched with the UV dye or bleach or whatever as I recall. It's been a dozen years since I did the article, and I'll probably revisit some of the sites instead of organizing my tying bench. One thing I do remember, as it's part of a patent-infringement topic, is that Damiki uses UV paints in some of their lures. It may be intentional or may not as a lot of things reflect UV, both artificial and natural.
fshndoug Posted December 3, 2023 Posted December 3, 2023 I am going to decline from taking photos of my fly tying stuff as I don't want Johnny Morris raiding my basement when the next pandemic hits. BilletHead, kjackson, nomolites and 1 other 1 3

kjackson Posted December 3, 2023 Author Posted December 3, 2023 Speaking of acquiring more stuff...Marty, did the geese you shot have flank feathers similar to those on mallards? Here I'm not talking about the barred appearance of the mallard flank, but rather the long, soft, flowing type of feather. I've not shot a goose in so long--and did so when I wasn't tying flies-- so that's why I'm asking. I'm thinking that it might be useful as wings in a small streamer. Not that I need more wing material...recently I was playing around in the garage and started picking at some white rope I have, working it to produce something like fake hair or the frizzed out macrame cord. It only needs to be on a fly or jig and fished to find out if it's workable. If it is, I could go into commercial production. Daryk Campbell Sr and BilletHead 2
