oneshot 1 Posted July 17 Posted July 17 What makes a plant or animal invasive? Was thinking they come from another country where people deal with this and they are not considered invasive. Then thinking about Farming. Everyone is use to using Man Made Chemicals. It would be far better but take a little more time doing it right and using natural. I had it brought up to me using Hemp and Bamboo for construction and other things are far faster and as good as wood. And this from a man that has trouble remembering because of Man Made Chemicals but also maybe some age. oneshot

FishnDave Posted July 17 Posted July 17 "An invasive species is an organism that causes ecological or economic harm in a new environment where it is not native." You could have a non-native species that does no ecological or economic harm, and therefore is not considered "invasive". Seems pretty subjective. What about introducing a non-native fish species to eat mosquito larvae, for example. Mosquitos are native. The introduced species is damaging the mosquito ecology directly, and possible damaging other species that normally feed on the previously abundant mosquito larva. So isn't that introduced fish species INVASIVE? I forget the specifics now, but recall reading about an insect that was brought to the US to deal with some perceived problem. In its native area, that insect didn't overpopulate because there was a fungal spore that kept its population in check. When they brought this insect to the US, they didn't bring the spore with it, so it's population exploded un-checked. Humans are the worst (whether intentionally or unintentionally) at introducing species where they weren't previously. In the end, we all live on this planet. BilletHead and snagged in outlet 3 2

IIRC the Aussies were trying to get hunters to immigrate there to help with introduced rabbit control, then they introduced fox to control rabbits and they became a problem. I think cats are a problem everywhere except maybe Thailand/Siam, I've read the Siamese cats are so domesticated that they don't hunt, so would starve in the wild. BilletHead 1
