I caught a beautiful SM/LM cross near Shell Knob a few years back and I believe I posted the pic here. I also sent it by email to MDC and they thanked me for the pic and confirmed it was indeed a SM/LM cross. I had seen plenty of SM/spot hybrids (meanmouths) but that was one of the first SM/LM crosses I had witnessed. 

So yes, they will cross-breed in the wild. 

Always remember:  If it's not forbidden by the laws of nature, it's mandatory.  So if they can cross in the lab, they WILL cross outside the lab.  Maybe not very often, but they will.

We released this fish but gentleman who made a replica for us was from Smithville in NW Missouri. He has a degree in Marine Biology.

He said this fish was a cross between a smallmouth and a largemouth. It did have brown eyes not red ones like a spot hybrid.

Would love to see a photo of that replica. That's a toad!
