    What's Cooking?

    Woring on supper for the kids as part of my grampa duty day. As usual not. Pretty and definitely not photo worthy but will be tasty. Small pork loin, seared in the skillet the slow roasted till done. Other skillet caught a pound of cheap bacon, cut up in one inch pieces, a nice big red onion, chunked up, a bag of small taters chunked up, a bag of petite baby carrots because my grandson loves cooked carrots. As it is getting close to done a handfull of asparagus Spears on top to steam slowly while waiting for my daughter to come home. Anybody on a creek bank would recognize it as a variation of what we used to call "grub", however I didn't dump a can of pork and beans on top and call every one with a hog call.

    My wife used to make an amish friendship bread. You get a "start" from a friend and you kept it in the freezer until ready to start growing it. If memory serves it was basically feed it some sugar and flour and keep it in a warm place, at some point you divided it, put some back for later and gave some to a friend. The remainder you turned into a bread that basically you could have made anything out of, usually raisins, cinnamon, orange peel that sort of stuff was my favorite. Took something like 10 days or so before you got to make bread, was dang good bread but never had the "whang" of sourdough, I was never quite clear if it was a type if sourdough or not. I do like a good funky, chewy warm sourdough.
  3. Any species that has a large number of its pooulation consumable size is gonna be a major food source for a predator fish. I am not sure if bass have the mental acuity to actively pursue carp or trout as a higher energy food source or if that simply goes back to having a lot of carp or trout in the food chain. I gotta admit that I like the carp nutrition label, I may save and print it out.

  6. I suspect several factors are at play, including an increased rate of harvest, habitat changes, behavior changes, possibly some genetics, more anglers and of course a shortage of baby carp to eat.
  7. Whew, I thought it was just that fish didn't get to live as long due to more fishermen etc. Good to know it only the genetics getting watered down.
  8. The last time I put dad in the boat he ended up with pneumoniania, a few years later I got him to go out on an accessible dock with me to fish, but he had lost the touch and desire. It was many years befor I fished regularly with anyone else. I hope my last trip I am only there for the trip out, the trip back o hope to have crossed over, unlikely it will work out that way though.

    Hell yeah! I can smell the smoke, remember the feel.of wet feet and putting wet shoes back on in the chilly morning air, the sight and sound of a small mouth blowing up on an early morning buzzbait, the sun burning through the morning fog and finally warming you up.
  10. I have never kicked a rod overboard, however a gentlemen I fish with often have done it twice with me, his rods. Both times in his boat, both times we saved it. Both times required a headlong dive from the back deck and flopping over the throttle to grab it, resulting both times in some impressive bruising as I bruise very easily. The last time he ended up completely overboard trying to grab one I already had a grip on. To be fair to him he has like size 16 feet. I keep.my rods far from him.

    Tonight I decided it was time for salisbury steaks. 50 50 ground chuck and pork sausage, added a packet of herb and garlic dry soup mix, a dribble of liquid smoke and a shake of worchester sauce, mix well and made into patties. While that was happening I chunked up a couple of yellow summer squash in a skillet with some butter and seasoned with a garlic/herb grinder. Patties came of of skillet, in with a little beef stock to get all the brown goodies loosened up, then a jar of brown gravy and back in with the patties as the gravy heated. Quick bath of instant mashed taters, because there was gravy. From start to finish just over 30 minutes, and was pretty good, patties tender and flavorful, gravy not bad for jar gravy, and the squash heck they are always good. Just got to remember to take a photo before it gets eaten, I guess I could take a pic of my belly but don't want to ruin everyone's appetite. How about a leftover pic. Got some turnips getting big enough to go to slaughter too, need to raid that patch, tender young turips are yummy.

  13. I used to run a lot if them this time of year, but didn't shoot them tull it got colder. Just letting the beagles work the rust off. Some times I really miss those days.

  15. I was gonna say I didn't want to catch anything that would like coconut, then you added hemp seed, now I am in a quandry. Maybe I will just mix up some old strawberry jello bait or wheaties and cheap bourbon.

  17. How is the outlet itself, does the plug fit tightly with no wiggle? Loose fit will also cause the plug to get hot.

    Generals chicken, orange chicken, lemon chicken, like them all, just don't like the cashew as cashew sauce. Tonight I settled for bacon, lettuce, tomato and red onion slice sammich, and checking the rain gauge to see almost 2 inches of rain!!

    Fully understand that, I just would take generic asian fast food over the specific Cashew Chicken every time.

    I would take panda express over cashew chicken. I just am not a fan of cashew chicken.

    Bacon an creamy cheese sauce. There is nothing wrong with that.
  24. Snagged in Outlet, I am with you, spinning reels, and casting reels all left handed. For me it was a holdover from spinning reels, my fist ones didn't have the option to switch sides with the handle. I have tried to run a spinning reel right handed and it just feels weird.
  25. Sometimes I have to re read Old Plugs post a time or 3, but have always been able to cipher out what he was saying. Besides sometimes my thumbs don't go where I think they do neither.
