  1. Many years ago on a college float on I believe the Eleven Point, one of the guys killed a cotton mouth on a log back in a little slough, being a good hillbilly we fetched it out of lhe water and lopped off its head and put it in the canoe. A few hours later at camp after some discussion powered by Budweiser I decided I would skin, roast and eat it. No salt nothing, just snake pieces in a green stick and some hot coals. I don't remember much on the taste, as if I could have tasted anything anyway at that point, but I remember how tough it was. We finally got to passing around the pieces to see who get even get a piece of meat off of it. No snake ever died a less glorious death than that poor critter.
  2. Those highwater years have done more for the successful reproduction of bass than all the release of spawning fish combined. I have no issue with continuing to vocally call for CPR of bass during the spawn but to lobby for a law restricting posession of legal bass (which would never happen anyway) is an example of a solution searching for a problem.
  3. I understand. I did do a little more checking and so far there is no official report of a population of them in Truman, even with the that incident the have been unable to confirm a population. Not going to hold my breath, but hope they stay out. Can't for the life of me see any reason they wouldn't thrive in Truman once established.
  4. Not sure about people sometimes but I can tell by looking at a dog if it safe to pet or not. Even the tail wag without the body language to go with it is a warning not an invitation.

    What's Cooking?

Basic meat and taters. It's actually a smallish sirloin roast, seasoned with Sal pepper and a little garlic powder, now slowly cooking on the grill. Am brushing it with melted butter to which I added some soy and Worcester sauce. In 5he skilled are some large diced taters withe the salt pepper garlic pepper seasoning. Got a dr. Appt tomorrow, gotta build up my stamina right.
  6. I did find this, sorry I guess I should remember better, still haven't heard of any wide spread infestations. There were some found at Shell Osage Wildlife area I believe and the expectation is that they will travel down the Osage/Mari de cygnes, just haven't heard a confirmation. I can find out probably. Truman lake Cove closed for Zebra Mussel Treatment KANSAS CITY, Mo.— U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Missouri Department of Conservation Officials are working together to try and prevent the spread of Zebra mussels in Truman Lake. Zebra Mussels were discovered on the Grand River Arm of Truman Lake adjacent to the Tightwad boat launching ramp earlier this month. Therefore the cove located adjacent to Sky Village known as County Line Boat Ramp will be closed beginning Sunday evening, Sept, 29 for approximately 48-72 hours in order to execute the treatment. This is considered a point source infestation because mussels had been scraped into piles from a boat prior to the boat being launched. The cove where the Zebra mussels were discovered will be treated with copper sulfate. It is unusual to discover adult zebra mussels in a body of water that were recently introduced and were not present in the cove prior to the introduction event. These circumstances provide a good opportunity to eradicate the zebra mussels before they become established. Most of the time zebra mussels are already established when they are discovered in a body of water.
  7. I can be quite foul mouthed or quite clean spoken, depends on the situation. Put in a cabin for 3 or 4 days with my hunting and fishing buds and the air can get pretty blue, put me in my office talking to the public, I don't. However there are folks for whom it is so ingrained they don't even realize it. A very good family friend was a Bataan Death march Survivor, (USMC), and spend some time in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. When I knew him growing up he was the foulest mouthed, loudest voice individual I ever knew, didn't have a tooth in his head and chewed Redman like a fiend (mmmm I miss Redman). He was a Veteranarian and spoke the same way to everyone, he would meet you in town and ask how the *&%* you were, his wife was the sweetest non foul mouthed lady ever. He also had a heart of solid gold, would do anything for your, but that man could curse the paint off a ford tractor. Honestly I don't care about it, I don't like to hear it around women and kids (just raised that way), but if you want to curse around me fishing etc. I can play right along without losing any sleep. As for smoking I still enjoy my cigars (too much), but am pretty careful about where and how I smoke them, my truck, my boat, my shop, my rules. Your shop etc. nope. cigarettes smell completely different to me.
  8. Zebra mussels haven't been confirmed in TR yet, but suspect it's a matter of time. Of course I thought the same about Pomme Stockton, and Truman being so close to LOZ but no confirmations yet. Hope they stay out.
  9. Oneshot, I haven't bank fished there, but just above that area the crappie are in full spawn. The access road down to the Fristoe side is often fished from the bank quite a bit with decent success. Turn by the Rock House just south of Fristoe, take the left at the 3 way and drive right down. I think it is Raven road up by 65. There are some others places where they walk in but think they are walking a ways.
  10. color and pattern looks like a young black rat snake to me.
  11. I am still wearing a 10 yr old pair of oakleys, only glasses I have ever given over 20 bucks for. Replaced the lenses once due to them having a rough life. I also have a pair of Berkley with the reading lens I use a lot. Can tie a new jig on without digging out my readers. But they make the floor of the boat a little out of focus when you look down, takes some getting used to.
  12. Nice work gentlemen, get some of them things killed our so they don't try to k ock my windshield out as I head to the launch ramps. They taste just fine, but can't fix them like a fat Ole butterball, but they will never be as good as crappie fillets.
  13. Heck I ended up with a 2 stroker Yamaha 90 HP a few years back just because I was too cheap to buy a 4 stroke. Everyone was saying how much better the 4 strokes were, but how many 1960 something model 2 strokes are still out there and running, I plan for my Yamaha to outlive me. It runs great, its a little cold natured, and definitely does not like to have its little fuel line bulb pumped, and doesn't like to be choked, but otherwise its boringly reliable.
  14. Dan dangerous place is Table Rock. Even the fish will try to garotte you.
  15. Crappie on on the banks on the upper ends anyway. Males with tails getting ragged, females with eggs that would squirt out with a little extra pressure. No secret spots, work the shoreline in spawning areas, seemed to be around trees with 6 feet of bank most all day. Jig color didn't matter just take plenty since it is truman, a jig eating lake if there ever was one. Wind made for some tricky casting as it rolled around the points and into the coves, wind sent a few casts way off costing me yet another jig. Oh I have plenty and a big bowl of fillets. Water temp was around 58 to 61.
  16. Might just be partly in the shade for the pic but looks like a yellow perch on the front half and greenie on the back half.
  17. Almost exact same report I would give for upper ends of Truman. Except maybe more fish, limited out by 11 c&r for a few hours tossing perfectly good 10 inchers back. Almost all were within a few feet of the bank. No big piles in one place just keep moving and covering the bank, turn around and go back if it was good. Actively spawning males with ragged tales, plenty of females that would flow eggs with a little pressure. Turkeys gobbling, man I love spring.
  18. Nice fat rascal too.
  19. Tha is precisely what the state is wanting to do. I can't figure out what changed in the last 50 years though. When I was a kid hogs were free range in many places and not just in the ozarks and I don't ever remember a problem with feral hogs or hearing anything about them.
  20. Limits of walleye, pretty girls, life is good.
  21. It is slowly getting better, I only managed 8 last night but I had decided I was going to catch them shallow bust. Darn bass were crazy a I could have kept a limit of keeper bass easily.
  22. MDC is pushing to ban pig hunting on MDC managed lands and are trying to get other land management agencies to follow suit. There have been some public meetings and I haven't heard much about it lately. Even if it passes you will still be able to hint them on private lands.
  23. I believe you can still hunt pigs , hasn't changed yet.
  24. Being fish that don't make beds and just spawn in the open they prefer to spawn on river gravel etc. However if those conditions don't happen the exact way they like it and they are caught in the lake with a belly full of eggs and the amount of sunlight and water temps are saying spawn or forget it, well they are gonna spawn and let the eggs take their chances. Fish that make beds will often re-absorb the eggs if conditions are too far outside their needs, but its amazing how versatile they can be to get off a spawn, but the success of the spawn will vary with conditions.
  25. I like to have a cheaper/less expensive reel on a creek wading or floating trip. Somehow if I take a nicer reel it shoots craps. (but that was back when I had shimanos)
