  1. I have one of the newer ones with the rough texture, one seasoned it does very well. Using cast iron is a learned skill, older folks had to learn because it's all they had. Younger generation doesn't like the whole you have to larn how to use it concept. Even my wife after several years gets them too hot too quick and thinks stick. I have one I found in an old house that never leaves my stove and as a result gets used a lot. Some things I don't like them for, I don't like scrambling eggs or making omlettes in them, I will happily use my small non stick skillet for that. But for meat, nothing beats cast iron, whether is bacon, or steak.
  2. Three are always areas where it is lower or for some reason you see fewer deer. I was talking withe MDC person who came by to take CWD sample and she said there was a lot of EHD in this area. I did find a dead deer by our little creek in august I believe and she confirmed that would be about the right time. State wide kill opening weekend was down by around 10K I believe, still plenty of deer overall though. And more importantly the crappie population is fabulous.
  3. Been a slow season here, way less deer seen that in years past. I am bad about getting bored with calibers, bullets, loads and want to try something else. Field dressing done, couldn't have placed her shot better with a laser pointer, both lungs destroyed, top of heart gone, no meat damaged. About as clean a rifle killed deer as I have gutted. Same result as before though. Shot, jump, kick, run, pile up dead at about 50 yards. There has also been a coyote that was I jure or sick wandering around the pasture that I was gonna hunt after she finished with deer. Well I guess I will have to go fishing instead because he walked in front of her and caught a bullet at top of shoulders/spine. And man is he a stinky rascal.
  4. For something like 18 years I have been loading the same bullet and powder charge for my wife's .243, well the performance has gotten boringly routine. So this year I replaced her 100 grain hdy interlock with an 80 grain Hornaday 80 grain GMX all copper bullet. They shoot well in her rifle and have even a little less recoil that her special loads did. Heard her shoot a little while ago and got a text that she has a little 3 point down so I guess they work too. Will see in a little bit what sort or damage the new bullet did, apparently it was enough.
  5. I would agree that it is technically possible but highly unlikely. Now had it been a feral or wild running dog yeah I wouldn't have thought twice about it.
  6. Very nice, gorgeous smallies and nice gogglers too.
  7. I think it has to do with size at 3 yrs of age and overall expected life expectancy. Fish in those southern lakes have a lot longer growing season and get bigger faster. Fish in mo have a shorter season and tend to be slower growing, around 9 inches in 3 years. If I remember stockton and Table Rock were both 10 inch MLL and it really didn't make a difference in overall size of the population in general. I don't think any of the big lakes have a shortage of shad, or cover. Heck I remember when there were no MLL and you could take home 30 at a time, was no shortage of crappie.

    What's Cooking?

Seems like we never show breakfast. Since I had to get up early to get my wife off to her deer stand I decided to make breakfast for myself and mom. Cinnamon pancakes, half with raspberry preserves and the other half with syrup. Link sausages and a couple over easy eggs so they ooze everywhere when cut into.

    What's Cooking?

https://www.ozarkrevenge.com/2016/05/summer-special-fish-burgers-with-fruit.html?m=1 I think this is the one I used. RPS has lots of recipes on that site. I also used the walleye chowder but substituted white bass and it was fabulous, probably even work with your "Mutt" white bass.

I have tried his fish burger recipe and it is dang good.
  11. Nah they see so much stuff like this they just read it and move on. Heck this one ain't even bad. I mean come on, where are the actual accusations of waste fraud and abuse, where are the calls for investigations, charges filed, congressional inquiry and oversight. You can do better.

    What's Cooking?

Last couple nights was God eats, nothing overly exciting or photo worthy. Last night was some pan seared salmon to ight was a grilled pork loin. Sides and sauces were the more interesting. For the salmon I wanted to make a sauce and started with mayonnaise with some horseradish, garlic and lemon. Wasn't bad but didn't hit the right note. Second attempt was soy sauce with a lot of ginger from a squeeze bottle my wife had and some garloc powder. Now that one really worked well. So for the pork loin I also grilled a couple Portabellas and made a new sauce of soy, teriyaki, ginger, garlic and a little coca cola to lighten it up a bit, dang it was perfect for the pork. Maybe I will make some if my wife whacks a deer, bet it would be good brushed on a tenderloin and grilled too.
  14. I'm a just gonna read and giggle occasionally.
  15. Big football smallmouth. Never been there but I want to go sometime.
  16. Let the weather and lake conditions be your guide. Lake levels in different areas can be radically high or low. LOZ and Truman can be good, although Truman isn't as good for largemouth as it was several years ago, but there are a lot of white bass and hybrids to full the gaps. And of course in April if you get bored go catch some crappie! My bucket list is to go to TR and catch smallies or to Melvern Lake in KS and target those smallies.
  17. I don't hate them that bad to fish when it's that cold anymore.
  18. From the journals I think they did a lot of poling upstream. While it would have been an awesome adventure it would have been a miserable day to day life. What are we doing today? Let's see we will work like dogs poling this boat against the current and around sandbars and snags then make camp. Tomorrow however we will do it all over again, but maybe get lucky and have a thundrestorm come through and break this miserable heat for a little bit. But at least these buckskin are comfortable when it's wet.
  19. Of course it also took Lewis and Clark almost 2 1/2 years to make it to the Pacific Ocean and back. I enjoyed reading their journals while sitting in a tree stand several years ago. There were days when they camped almost within sight of their previous days camp. But reading about how hot it was made sitting the cold stand more bearable. Always wondered how many deer I missed because I was too busy reading.
  20. Can you take it to a dealer and get a printout or something certified by the dealer?
  21. Many years ago when we lived in the old house we had a big ashley wood stove we used for heat and it had to heat everything. In 1o84 we built a new huse and moved the big Ashley into it. The first time we built a fire we had all the doors and windows open. Made it through 2 winters with a window basically wide open. Finally dad decided that was enough and put in a Warm Morning propane stove and it's still here. Ironically dad decided to go with propane about the same time I completely moved out for college?
