  1. "Dillo Whacking" is one of those things country kids can do now while out driving around, because we'll that's what hillbilly kids do and Whacking armadillos certainly causes less problems than other choices. Wasn't enough (or any that I knew of) when I was of age to drive around gravel roads with my friends.
  2. A piece of pipe or aluminum bat will work too. Kicking them hurt your foot, back and knees. And they heavier than they appear. No not hard to kill, but they will often run off when shot, which is not a bad thing. Not sure but what I wouldn't rather have a shotgun at night especially among cows, but the .22 will work just fine. Trapping them has never created any pets I know of, you have to give them a long baptism, like 10 minutes in a pond still in the trap and they calm right down. Most of the ones I have eliminated have been targets of opportunity, arrow, deer rifles, club etc. Whatever is available will work, though I no longer am interested in chasing them on foot. Back when I had beagles they would occasionally chase them, but weren't quite sure what to do about them.

    What's Cooking?

I should have taken a pic of the spread tonight. Garlic parmesan wings, gluten free terryaki wings, some smoked wings, a smoked hind quarter from a button buck (dang it was good), dips chips and all sorts of stuff there. Alas I had to leave about 9:30 ad take mom home, she wasn't about to stay up that late with that many people. But my wife will.be able to stay until the final wing is gone and drink some bubbly grape juice for me. We go through several bottles of the sparkling grape, white grape and raspberry (the best) and maybe a half bottle.of actual alcaholic bubbly. Good time, anyway talking hunting, cattle you name it and solving the world's problems in typical country folk style.
  4. 17 HMR is a zapper for sure You can find Marlins or Savages in .17 HMR fairly cheap though. If shooting at night a decent pawn shop 20 gauge shotgun with some large sized shot would work also as shots are likely to be close. Friend of mine traps them using a couple of long boards to make wings to direct them into a trap and baits it with applesauce, seems to work fairly well for him.
  5. I am one of those who is not a 10/22 fan, they are OK, but for critters like coyotes they can carry lead well. ARs are cheap, accurate and about as bullet proof as it gets. PSA has rifle kits on sale right now for $299. Buy a lower at any gun show or shop for $50, assemble the pieces into the lower, buy a magazine ammo and I reccomend a lower power scope in the 2-7 range. Or something like a Mossberg Patriot or Savage in 223. Second shots are still quick, makes for better first shots as well. Heck drive me around and I will bring my own rifle and ammo, then we can go fishing! Worst thing about an AR is that they fling empties around, not a problem in a UTV probably but inside the cab of a pick up its bad news. ARSs need very little care, just keep the bolt oiled and keep shooting.
  6. Beat up Marlin bolt action 22 WMR. Will easily handle a 100 yat shot, cheap and easy to find, plenty accurate. Not as cool a some other options but will work well. If an AR is more your preference they are cheap right now also.

    What's Cooking?

I am having roast lamb tonight and some asparagus, probably some other stuff too but that is what I saw. NYE will be a buffet of wings, smoked venison and who know what else will be brought.
  9. I have never seen a Golden Eagle.in MO, but to be honest I don't really pay that much attention to it. I would think something as large as a Golden I would notice but not necessarily so. I don't doubt that there are some around though, heck I would like to see one around the lake here.
  10. My old German Shepard used to love cat and kittens. Apparently they taste good, you had to introduce him to a new cat so he would know it was OK to live there, and even then if it copped an attitude he would sometime eat them. I don't have a problem with cats or hawks catching and eating birds around a bird feeder, they are just doing what predators do.
  11. Heck I am.now down to one cat that is almost old enough to vote. Had an adult bald eagle around for a few weeks, and the other cat, big ole white neutered Tom that like to stalk stuff in the pasture has vanished. I may have to go looking for a dang cat, that is embarrassing! Feral cats trapped in a live trap must be bathed and baptized prior to release or taking to a shelter. About 10 minutes in a pond, trap and all cures all their evil hissing. They can then be released anywhere and not cause any problems.
  12. I was always a throat cutter on deer. A couple if them spurted blood a long way, obviously not yet dead. One I examined the neck wound on and have no doubt she would gotten up. Both were neck shots that weren't perfect. Squirrels have an amazing grip on trees even if only half alive.

I'm with ya John, split em in half, bine them and into the electric smoker, easiest way ever to cook them, tender, juicy and delicious.
  14. An apparently dead squirrel in a game vest that comes back to life is a very big surprise when you are a kid. Amazing how much commotion it can cause in a short amount of time. A recently rerurned to consciousness squirrel can really hang onto your pants leg and a tree trunk. Still my favorite critter to hunt.

    What's Cooking?

Merry Christmas to Everyone. I have a 5.5 lb standing rib roast awaiting it's appointment with the smoker, and was told will have a few extra mouth to feed, so thawing out some venison loin to quick sear as well. Bread dough rising to make a batch of cinnamon rolls, and 25 lbs or so summer sausage mixed and stuffed last night with my new Cabas stuffer also awaiting a trip to the smoker. And best presents of all, my son will be here, and my daughter will be bringing my grandson. Rather have hugs than open any gift.
  16. Crappie fishing with UL gear I can't count the number of time I have had a hit that I never came close to landing. Most of them likely were carp or catfish, maybe a big drum on occasion. I have been ravaged multiple time theowing crankbaits by muskie, pretty obvious when that happens. Way back shortly after college when I lived in Forsyth I was out in my boat across from the Rockaway ramp, happily catching the occasional small trout on my UL and 2lb mono, got a tap and set the hook, had that BIG rainbow up to the boat two or three times, only net I had was a tiny one. Even had a guy ull up and watch, finally up to the boat and it decided to run under the boat and I couldn't get my rod down quick enough, felt the line slide over one rivet hen popped on the second one and was gone. The old guy watching said, "that was a big trout son" and left. I have NEVER caught a rock, stick, tennis shoe, t shirt, ball cap, turtle she'll etc. and thought it was a fish. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Anybody who says otherwise, well the one of us is lying.

    What's Cooking?

Home alone with mom today so unlike me I am working on tomorrow night supper. Deboned to rump roasts, cubed the meat, and dumped the bones and trimmings into a big stock pot to sear a bit. Half a bottle of coca cola as I was thirsty to deglaze. Water, bullion, chunked up large onion, chunked up some green onions that were languishing in the fridge, and some various spices that I found in the cabinet. And plenty of garlic because I like garlic. Gonna simmer all the goodness out of it today and my wife will make a big ole pot of vegetable beef soup for friends supper Sunday night. Careots, taters, onions and mushrooms. Apparently I am also going to make a batch of either bread or rolls. Have also been told it will be gluten free as 2 of the groups are gluten intolerant? Never tried that before.

    What's Cooking?

BAM. Big Arse Meatloaf in the oven. Recipe was sketchy as wife was on wa home from work. 1.5 lb of ground beef, 1 5 lb of ground deer, 1 lb of pork sausage. 3 eggs, 2 packets of dry soup mix, a few various things from cabinet that caught my eye, (soy sauce, cavenders, brisket rub, a little of each). No idea where she hides bread crumbs, but I have a loaf of bread, a toaster, big knife and cutting board. So I made my own. Then when she go home she added a part of a jar of some king of spaghetti sauce that was in the fridege, fire roasted tomato and garlic. It's sort of a hobo stew of meatloafs. She will put ketchup over the top later when we suck out some of he grease. I am already planning for a giant meatloaf sammich for my lunch tomorrow.
  20. Well it already has a trailer hitch, seems like a waste to not have a boat to pull.

Awesome a new place to try!
  23. Stinger160 in October of 2014 I got the exact same news. Where are you located and where are you doing your Bone Marrow Transplant at? I went in to University of Kansas system the first week of April in 2015, talk about a way to ruin the spring fishing season! The ride into the clinic daily went by some of the best morel looking places I have ever seen, but of course I wasn't allowed out at all let alone shrooming. Friends and everyone on OA kept me going with pics of their exploits. Shoot me a PM if you ever want to discuss it or just have a bad day, I know exactly what you will go through. Just know this, it does get better, my sister who works in a chemo clinic ga e me the best advice to sleep as much as you can, which is easy as you are tired a lot. My goals for 2019 are pretty simple, to enjoy every single gle day of it, never know how many days you have left. Specific goals are to spend some time with my grandson catching crappie, white bass and bluegill. If lucky maybe I will find my way to Canada for that bucket list item.

    What's Cooking?

Heck with the Irish Cream you have me with the Gumbo. I had a first for me today. I knew I had a dr. Appt. Today in Spfld, and it was a very rare day that my wife was able to go anywhere with me so we me it almost a date day. Decided we wanted to eat someplace new, and for no good reason I decided upon Vietnamese. Ended up at a place on South Campbell called Hong Yen, and had a bowl of Pho placed in front of me. It said bowl but dang what a big bowl.it was. I chose a rare beef and meetball (their spelling), it was fabulous, broth was very good, the beef tender and delicious, lots of noodles and a pile of bean sprouts to add. Never having eaten Pho before I can't say it was the best Pho ever made, but it was the best I have ever eaten. Good enough I will be back. No i didn't come close to eating the entire bowl either, I felt ashamed.
  25. I would almost bet that the reason a state change about felon in posession of a firearm was dropped is so that the Feds could have him. I thought it comes with a 6 month stay in the crossbar hotel.
