  1. Yeah most of my dragging was up, down normal rivers, we might lose an inch or two overnight but all it added was a little pucker factor on the way back to the ramp. Your story reminded me of a day on the Salt River, we ran up on big water and enjoyed the river as it fell out, then it really fell out. It was pretty tense trip back the ramp that day, we left a lot of blue pant on the river bottom.
  2. For a couple of decades the brother and I would take our river jon down some pretty small rivers with some skinny flows (200cfs) with full confidence we could bang and drag our way back up to the ramp, we’ve done it may times with overnight gear in the boat. If it was a gravel riffle we’d run as fast as we could until the pump was just about to suck gravel, I’d kill and lift the motor while Dan would jump out to hold the boat as it came to a halt. If the shoal was rocks and cobbles we’d edge up to it slowly and grind our way through it as far as we could, then jump out and drag the rest of the way up. Doing this got us on a lot of water that other boats were afraid to run and many weekends we had the river to ourselves. Any more we’re not so cock sure or as strong, those days may be over.
  3. I have a buddy who once caught a bass out of 38 that was so big it it scared him to stick his hand in its mouth. Your fish doesn’t sound like it was a bass. Was I time when 38 has some fair Bluegill and nice red ears, not so sure about hybrids.
  4. Don’t skimp on price, we ended up stripping and repainting before we had a durable coating. I don’t recall what brand we use but I came from our local West Marine store, we added sand or some type of abrasive.
  5. Beautiful craftsmanship.
  6. If I had a pole barn......
  7. I can't imagine a use for Power Poles or Talons on the rivers I fish. I would like to have an Ultrex but, I'm hesitant to add more weight to the river jon.
  8. Are you on C R this weekend?
  9. Earlier today I asked Linda what we needed to survive the pending doom. We came up with the essential B's, beer, briquettes, and bird seed, I'll make a run tomorrow, we'll be fine.
  10. Nice boat, lots of room for overnight gear.
  11. It’s no surprise, I’m sure it will get worse and likely never improve. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to be optimistic about the future.
  12. Ain’t no such animal.
  13. Good idea, happy hour or lunch. Happy hour will be a little harder once daylight savings kicks in.
  14. That’s a good looking bait, I can’t wait to try them.

    Bluegill?

Bluegill are a big deal, this spring we spent our vacation fishing for them. Four days fishing the strip pits in southern Illinois and four days on Reelfoot. Southern Illinois is strictly fly fishing and Tennessee is slide bobbers and crickets. I enjoy Bluegill fishing as much, maybe more then any other fishing I’ve done.
  16. Bass, and cigar, good catch.
  17. I agree, It wouldn’t much effort to make the fish they do stock go a little further and maybe grow a little before being taken. What the river really needs is a high water year.
  18. Yep, it’s the same level of stupidity, it will be a tragedy if the driver doesn’t lose his CDL.
  19. Thanks Phil, I’ll see how it works this weekend.
  20. I can’t argue with the need to increase revenues for roads given the poor condition of our highways and bridges as well as the declining revenues from the current tax. It seems to me 123M per year doesn’t buy much road or many bridges. I know even less about the MHP and their needs so I can’t comment.
  21. Excellent fishing report, the forum always welcomes the contributions of new members.
  22. Great fish Pete, way to go.
  23. We’ve had some very good fishing floating from Bennett’s peak campground to treasure island but the water is super skinny in the fall. The stretch downstream from Saratoga has much more reliable water levels. If you don’t hire a guide will need the upper north Platte floaters map from the WGFD. Study it closely, you will find very little public land and accessable wading water below the National forest at Bennett. Take the trespassing warnings serious, the land owners are extremely hostile towards anyone touching their rocks. If the wind blows your boat to shore or if you put a foot down to steady a pontoon boat you will likely have someone screaming at you while speed dialing the sheriff. That said it’s one the longest freestone trout rivers in the west, a beautiful place with lots of wild trout.
  24. Last weekend I watched a joy rider run the Meramec with a big jet, 200 HP or so. It didn’t appear the gentlemen made any attempt to read the river or select a path based on conditions, he simply ran straight down the middle and throttled up when he encountered shallow water. Judging from the chocolate water and the rocks shooting from the wake his boot and impeller got a good shine. We ran up the river in our 21ft glass river jon, 450lbs of fishermen, ~300lbs of gear and camping luxury powered by a 20HP jet and never ate a rock. You definitely don’t need big power as much as you need your eyes and a little sense.
