    What's Cooking?

you old man no wonder Mrs B has to retrieve your geese Happy Belated Birthday
  3. My brother hunted deer in the area before the water came up. Lots of sloughs and cattails. He said he never saw so many pheasants. Don’t see or hear them up where we camp but we saw several one day we were about 30 miles south. There are 2 lodges up there that offer hunting. Lynn lake lodge andHidden Hills.
  4. Eden evokes thoughts of paradise,For me it is Eden SD where my brother and I have gone for the last 5 years around Memorial day. It strarted as a long Memorial weekend and has morphed into a 12 day fishing marathon. Eden is in the notheast corner of SD in the galcial lakes region. I don't know much about geology but the area is fasinating. The galcial push apparently pushed up this area ,it is 600 feet higher than the surrounding ground. The rolling hills collect and hold water. Backin the late 80's heavy snows and rains flooded the area enlarging lake and creating new ones. Farm land and home were engu;lfed in the process. The rising water was a boom for the fisheries and big walleye lakes were formed. In the last 4 years rain has been lacking and the water levels are coming down. Fishing isn't as good as it was but it is still pretty good. Diverse as well we caught or shot 7 different spieces this year. My main attraction is the bass. 4 years ago LM were abundant. Their number have decreased but the SM remain strong. northerns come along while fishing for bass. Everyone else there fishing are pusueing walleye or panfish and since my brother is a long time SD resident we have to spend time fishing for them. We camp at a state park on Roy Lake and travel 10-30 minutes to lakes around us. We usually fish 2 lakes a day. This year we fished 12 different lakes. The weather often helps us with or choices. This year wind was the main issues, years past major cold fronts . Despite bad weather the fish are usually willing to bite. This year my best day the wind was blowing 25mph so we were limited where we could fish on a smaller lake. My best 5 weigheed 22# and I caught several SM in the 3# range. my brother found a grade where the walleye were comng up to in the evening. A grade is where a road that has been flooded is recovered by bringing in massive loads of rock creating a damlike riprap. One night he caught 15 walleys only 1 under the 20" size, inSD you are allowed only 1 walleye 20" or above. His biggest 28". We spent a few evening there before heading to Club Eden. The town club in Eden home of cheap beer, $3.75 for a 22oz IPA and eats. Wednesday night is wing night. They served 3600 wings on Wednesday night, pretty good for a town of less than a 100 people. The other thing that draws me to the area is the abundunt wildlife. It is spring and all the wildlife is out doing what they do. Geese this year were over the top. Everywhere and making as much noise as they could . If I could put down my fishing rod I would love to do some bird watching. Not only the waterfowl but song birds, pheasants, turtledoves, and turkeys.Lots more stroies but I'll finish with some pics. Google earth from mid 1980's and 2014 Not uncommon to see flloded farm yards big Smallmouth love bubblegum 2 nice LM Big fish of the trip she maxed out my 25#scale estimating 35# Good sized nothern football smallie limit of walleyes for the 3 of us celebrating our catch at Club Eden found the whites shallow one day, kept 30 all males. caught 75 between 3 of us in about an hour These smallie was into body piercing biggest walleye of the trip taken from the grade 28"
  5. great being able to swap a trip like that. We're heading to Venice in August. Like to be able to do it without having to hire guides.
  6. My question was answered by 176Champ,that being if there was stained water elsewhere. Down near Baxter most of the water was unstained till I rounded the bend heading up Big Indian. I had to slow to an idle to get through one area of debris. Headed to the backs of coves and most had plenty of water coming in that was now clearing. Fish seemed to like that clear/stain interface. The clear water was cooler because once I ran my boat through the stain I could see clear water underneath. Lots of small to medium spots. One cove it was every cast had trouble hooking up so I downsized to a ned for awhile. had a 17" ,18" ,181/2"LM and a couple right at keeper size lost one other nice one trying to flip him in the boat.Went out on the main lake all I found were banks with boats on them. The cove I'd fished the other day I thought would be good but I went by it 3 times and it always had one or two boats in it. After that I headed back through the debris though it had dissipated for the most part.Used plastics for most of the day color didn't seem to matter as long as it was green. Caught 2 of the bigger ones on chatterbait. Lots of debris a few big logs found another Goggleye today

  8. Had planned on putting in at Baxter but at the last moment turned off and headed to Aunt's Creek. Never put in at Baxter, seems like alot of crooked road down H and figured I could get there just as easy by water.. Hit one point in Aunts Creek that Bill Beck always liked, no love. Headed down the James then up river to a large gravel banked cove. At the back I hooked up with several smallies out in about 8 fow. Just across the lake was a small cut at the end of a bluff I'd had luck at years passed. Right at the bluff end got one on a shakeyhead. Usually I ljust swing them in the boat but this one looked like it would strain my 8# leader so I got the net out. Big LM but only weighed in at 2.75#, still nice. Ran over to fish a cove but see a boat as I get nearer hit to the next cove another boat. Third cove more boats but this one had several options so I found my point and headed down the bank. several fish on the gravel point, I think the approaching front got them active. The wind was right on it. Then just down from that a log near the bank yeilded 5 goggle eye. Thought the first was a fluke so I threw it back. Could have had a meal if I'd thought different. Hit a long thin cove with the wind coming right down it . Way at the back loads of bait. My graph gave an enticing picture so I tied up to a cedar in the middle ,old school Spotlock, started caatching bass. a few of each, 10 in all. They didn't want my SB or swimbait, ate Ned or shakyhead. When the front hit it seems to kill things for a few hours but it started up again around 2. I was on a bank right off main lake so I got a parade of derby boats for about a half hour full tilt heading downstream. finished with several smallies off that bank with one nice keeper. Finished with around 30 fish, probably 6 keepers, don't have a tape in the boat. They all came draggin the bottom, Ned, tube, or Shakyhaed Pictures aren't in sequence sorry Last smallmouth of the day Didn't look like it had spawned yet a friend told me he had caught some big goggle eye in TR just yesterday I said I never had till today Hoped some of these were bass and they were
  9. I was relly impressed with the size of them but don't expect a repeat..
  10. last year I was fishing in the wind, got hung up. Whike trying to get my $9 crankbait off the boat drifted hit a trre and off I went. Luckily I was in 4 fow. My TFO rod with tournement pro Lews went in but I recovered it too and the rock crawler
  11. No moss problem up the James and cleared up some just down from Baxter. some coves would be clear other had it thick.I foung the SM about where the snot quit

  13. right I just haven't seen any 18" white bass
  14. Met a buddy at CC monday I parked in overflow. Came back to this. Mine is the one in the middle. Thankfully empty trailers move without too much trouble
  15. 4 over 18"limit is to limit the number of hybrids kept in waters that hold them
  16. Impressive with it being in the low 30's that morning
  17. check the pairings. The 3rd place coangler's "pro" didn't even weigh a fish https://www.flwfishing.com/results/costa
  18. Haven't seen any comments on co angler winner putting 39# in the back of Pete Wenners boat while he gets only 9#
  19. I'm near Eldorado Spring for the next few days back in Springfield after that. Have the unit with me
  20. Item is back up for sale
  21. sweet boat You'll surprise other anglers when they see your MO registration numbers. Seeing more walleye rids around here lately. The Northerns difinitely favor the glass boats these days. Got a kicker?
  22. Fished out of Aunts Creek then headed up James. Caught 3 fish largest a 21/4 smallie. Then ran down main lake to try clearer water. It as clearer but not clear 2-3 ft viz. Found a couple in 10 fow with timber. Think we could haave caught some more but the wind was coming right at us so holding the boat steady was a job in itself. Should have bought the Ultrex .
  23. Item is sold
  24. i watched a youtube the other day and the fish graph showed only a change in bootom color and a slight rise but no arch. The guy put down an aqualvu and the fishwere probably 8" off the bottom. Don't remeber which graph but it was a good one
  25. 2015 about the same time of year I was in Spring branch. Came by a loon and he/she looked like it was trying to dive but wasn't going under. I turned around and it did it again. Thought maybe there was something wrong with it or maybe caught in something. after 2 attempts i picked him out of the water. I sat him in the other seat and he just sat there. Couldn't see anything wrong with it so I let him go. Beautiful birds and the feathers up close really strike you. note of caution even though they look docile their beaks are sharp
