JD, thanks for the update on the sculpin. I have never seen one and really did not believe it to be a cat, just the best description.

It was my 2nd time trout fishing, and I am ready to try again. I was kinda bummed, but I am over it now. I have read exactly what you are saying 3wt, just wish I would have practiced it. Maybe I would have a better report. It is definately new to me to use such light line, and have such clear water. I guess if I can get past the learning curve I will be OK. I guess it was like to blind leading the blind out there. I was the "senior fisherman" in our group. LOL

I did not go on the horn, went about 10:30'ish on Saturday morning. It rained from about 8:30 throughout most of the day. I did not catch anything, and did not see many others catching also. I surely did not see stringers full all day. I fished mostly up close to the Montauk lake in the artificial zone. I guess that was at the dam. I did notice that the fish were chasing, but then darting away. The man in the lodge explained that if that happens your line is to large. I had 4lb line. I got some 3lb tippett, and used that as a leader about 6 feet. I caught 1 fish about 8 inches and released him to be caught again. It was caught on a black and red maribou jig very small with a split shot. Water was ultra clear, sky was very cloudy, rain pretty steadily light to moderate. My son caught what I believe was a catfish fingerling size. It had pectoral fins with spines and a dorsal fin with a spine. I do not recall if it had whiskers. I did see a bunch of tiny bottom fish, not sure what they were. I did not think to ask at the lodge what they were. If any one could tell me what it was/could have been (not sure that it could have been a cat), I would be gratefull.

Well, Hank Patterson doesn't know what he is talking about LOL. Went to Montauk over the weekend. Tough fishing. I did not go out at the horn, so maybe that is where I messed up. Some things I have learned: Montauk's Campground 1 camping spots are not very friendly to tent campers vs many other state parks that I have camped at. The sites are very flat, but not very spacious. On the spot we chose online, it looked like a there would be a large spot between my site and the one next to me, not so. I was in sites 107, and 108. Reeds Fly Shop is not the shop that is close to the campgrounds. ( will have to try next time) I was told that Reeds was in the park, and as we were looking to find out where to get tags, we went into the lodge which has a fly shop. I made the mistake of thinking that it was Reeds, and just not marked. The hatchery is not as neat looking as Roaring River's hatchery and raceways. "As long as you don't expect too much, .... " Very true. Unfortunately everyone else had me hyped up. Very true words about people crowding you. I was fishing an area with a good pool in it. It had been a little while since I caught my only fish of the weekend, and a family of 3, walked up and was not 1 foot from me and started casting. No one else could be seen. If you camp in campground 1 and it rains, beware of the SAND. Sand is everywhere, and will get everywhere. Protect your equipment. I was under the impression that this would be a World Class Trout Fishing oppurtunity. I was dissapointed. I guess if you have alot of money and stock yourself up with the latest and greatest of equipment, and you hype yourself up, it is. I didn't. I have been to Roaring River twice. One time was during the weekend Hurricane Ike blew through, the river rose about 8 feet overnight. I did not catch anything, but the park was beautiful, and catered to the whole camping experience in my humble opinion ( we had to be evacuated to the higher campground). The second time we got rain the whole weekend, minus a couple of good hours, I caught 1 fish. I would endorse Roaring River over Montauk. I live in the St Louis area, and RR is alot further of a drive for us but well worth it. ... Disclaimer I am not an avid trout fisherman, I do not generally go fishing without the kiddos 2, 5, 12 years old. We did get a steady rain all weekend. (wife and kids were not enjoying that aspect of it) I am still new to the flyrod, (which I did not get to use... :-(

I really do appreciate all of the response. Unfortunately it will be stocked trout that I will be cooking. It will be on the grill at the campground, so, smoking is not very easilly done. I do love to use my smoker at home and I may bring some home if I like the fish. I have not had trout, and judging by the responses on here, the stocker trout should not be the determining factor. I like the idea of this one by Gatorjet (have not tried it yet). I would like to know how do you all prepare and cook your trout. I have not cooked any trout yet and I would like to get some advice. Thank you in advance. Daryk

I think I will be doing alright, now that I've watched a few Hank Patterson videos. Does anyone know how big of a cutbrown population they have? I would really like to catch a 2 foot 14incher. Gonna have at least 1 betty white. :-~

In a couple of weeks, I'm gonna go to Montauk. I am looking for info from anyone who has tips, tricks etc. I plan on visiting Reeds Fly Shop to get info and fresh tackle from them also. I will have kids in tow from 2 yrs old to 12. I plan on using my fly rod that I have only caught 1 fish on (so far). So, please don't hold back.

.... Can't help but think of the "Hundred Year Storm" from the movie Point Break..... "he aint comming back". In all seriousness, I hope if any of you decide to fish/hunt whatever during the rains, I hope you all come back. This stuff is dangerous and we all know it.

Seems kinda strange to remove a 6 acre pond for a school. Sorry to hear that you are losing such a great fishing spot. I don't know how many you can support in a pond that is approx 1/3 size. But overall good for you. Maybe you can meet up with others who have ponds that can "share the bounty".

I would lay half now, and half in the late fall. Just me.

I was camping with my family when hurricane ike came through, at roaring river state park. The flooding was amazing, and dangerous. We were moved up to a higher campground by the camp staff. The next morning, the river was well above 8 feet higher than it was the day before. Be extremely careful if you are camping in the storms produced.

No St Louis service? That stinks. ( I prefer to drive anyhow )

Good news to hear. I am planning a trip to Montauk sometime next month. Any other ideas, sugesstions would be appreciated as it will be my first time there. I plan on stopping at Reeds to get some info also. Now on to the Geo cacheing, I have read about them in the paper, and have a slight interest. What is the ettiquete on them? Do you put something in place of the items you removed? Do you add to the items? Do you shift the items? I guess How does it work is my main question?

Sorry to intercept, but will you all do us the favor of showing the rest of us all of the flies that were tied? Once all of your participants have recieved them of course. I do not tie, and do not fly fish very often (yet). That would be the reason I did not join, but I am interested in the outcome as well.
