  1. Fishinwrench:

My friend has a 1988 Mercury XR 150.  The thing runs great except for when he is running it in the 3800 to 4000 rpm range.  Every 20 seconds or so it is like you goose it and the rpm's go up 400 to 500 for just a brief second or 2 and then return to normal.  Any ideas what the problem is?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

No prob.  Are the RPM's actually fluctuating (noticeably) or is he just going by what the tachometer reads ?

The first sign of a failing voltage regulator is usually sporadic tach readings, so it's important to monitor the volt guage if you want to catch it early.

I believe the rpm's are actually fluctuating.   It sounds like you are goosing it but you aren't moving the throttle any.  Someone asked my friend if it could be cavitation but I don't think so.

Not likely unless he has changed props or made a jackplate adjustment.
