Likely in many areas, but not really here. The average speed of traffic on these lake roads is about 20-25. Not enough roadkill to keep a single hawk fed, much less a whole gaggle of them.

Pessimism is not a trait most people aspire to, but maybe they should. It's often associated with negativity, a "half-full" attitude, depression, and other mood disorders. However, a healthy dose of negative thinking isn't necessarily all bad. ... In fact, sometimes a little pessimism might actually be a good thing. Pessimists are extremely good at taking precautions. Because they expect things to go wrong, they play it safer too. They are the ones planning contingencies, buying insurance and thinking way into the future.

That last really cold day there were 4 hawks perched on power lines or in trees within sight of my porch. I don't understand why because there really isn't much at all for them to eat around here. Darn few squirrels, and even fewer rabbits, hardly any mice.....so why HERE? And they are here always, year round. They soar up high, patrolling the road I assume because anything crossing the road is easy to spot. Anything, smaller than a Bassett hound, that crosses the road, is doomed.

What's your -current- favorite fly reel ?
fishinwrench replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Since I need so many, and the quality and price are so good, this is my current favorite. Zero problems so far in 4 (going on 5) years. -
Do you tie on Mustad fly hooks ?
fishinwrench replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Fly tyers don't get paid enough ! It's insane that a single bass jig can sell for 9.99.......but a Royal Coachman or a Muddler Minnow is only worth .75 cents. An articulated Zoo Cougar is only worth 1.25 ??? GTFOH ! -
Yeah. Around here the rabbits have a terrible hemorrhage when the hawks snatch them out of the field.

OAF Forum Rules - Revisited

When someone speaks with brooms, hickory switches, and frying pans..... Everybody understands ! -
Ol Al was mistaken. To say that would be the same as saying that at 500 RPM a 10 inch wheel won't travel any further in 1 minute than a 20 inch wheel.

Possession limits are an ignorant regulation to begin with. It's ok to give it away..... but illegal to preserve and keep it. How freakin' stupid is that? Too bad they couldn't have enacted a possession limit on toilet paper during the dreaded pandemic.

The only thing I ever saw my grandma read was the newspaper and the bible, but if she read any of my posts she'd smile. So, what's your point? 😁 I don't know your grandma, but it I bet she'd tell you to not be 6 months late on a post. 😂 -
I don't know. I've always liked Sage rods, but I also always thought that they were grossly overpriced. I've had several different models in the past but only have 1 now. My 9'8wt. is a Sage Bolt that I got a really good deal on when they discontinued them. I like it, but honestly if my eyes were closed I couldn't tell you whether you just handed me my Sage 8wt. or a Piscifun 7wt. that sells for less than 100.00 I can tell you one thing that I know for sure, and that is this..... Whenever a blank builder paints a rod blank, they are doing it to hide inconsistent wraps of the fibers. If the blank was truly AWESOME the maker would want to DISPLAY that.

February 2022 Ozark Anglers Crane Creek trip
fishinwrench replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Crane Creek
It's a good "search fly". I carry it in a #14 but everyone I know that tries to pound Crane to death says that bigger stuff seems to work better. So your 12-10 guess would probably be better. -
Everyone I know loved the XP rods. Why discontinue such a popular model? I've never owned one but I've casted them, and they are about as perfect as a fly rod can be IMO If they could still be bought with a warranty I'd own 3-4 of them. But back when they could be bought new my pockets weren't deep enough.🙄

Yeah there were a couple days after Phil did "something" that the ads were more in line with what I'd expect......but it's right back to the random ads/pop-ups in need of parental discretion now, and has been for awhile. Some, I don't think, are even ads. If so I have no clue as to what they are trying to sell. Just shock value click-bait I think.

This might explain all these incessant crappie fishermen that are out there all day/every day. It's either that, or they just hate their wives and kids and need to stay away from home as much as possible. Even if that was the case you'd think they could find something else to do. Nobody can enjoy crappie fishing, and crappie eating THAT MUCH.

Yes, and yes. Not sure on a price for the Merc 25 yet unless you want it as/is (it has a scored cylinder and needs either a powerhead overhaul or a powerhead replacement. If you want to buy it as/is, and have someone else fix it up....you can have it all for the price of the lower unit alone (450.00) The Evinrude (shown) is a 30hp 20" shaft. with good compression and no spark. Don't hold me to it (because I haven't been completely through it yet) but I think it'll sell for 3400.00 w/controls, a fresh paint job, and a 2 year warranty.

Actually the toaster one was my favorite. Every toaster I've ever had made black toast at a setting of 5 or above. Put them on 6 only if you want to test your smoke detectors. And the scale goes to 10 ? 😳

Pretty boat. Hope it's good to ya. 👍

What motor did you trade it in for ?
-
That's where I first got turned on to it. For Chuck, it was supposedly a good trout and smallmouth fly...... but I never did well with it until I scaled it down and used it on bluegill.
-
Oh yeah......You can also do really well with a NO HACKLE version of the BUBfly. Just omit adding any lead wraps. Having the hackle just slows the fall of a weighted fly, and in my mind I feel like it makes it easier to maintain that little bit of tension on the line/leader without moving the fly forward much.
-
I gave up on the "Bully", but it did teach me the slow-sink method that is THE BOMB when it comes to flyfishing for bigger bluegill. I fish a #12 BUBfly in the same fashion as you would a Bully Spider.....and it is hands down my #1 subsurface bluegill fly. The secret is to keep the rod tip about 8" above the surface and keep just a tiny bit of tension against the fly.... Pay close attention to the angle of the fly line from rod tip to water surface and maintain that angle as the fly slowly sinks. Then set the hook when that angle changes any at all. A bobber "strike indicator" will not show those bites. It's an absolutely deadly technique for bigger gills. Also, in every body of water I have ever fished for bluegill.....all BLACK (black thread, black body, black legs, and black hackle) has always outperformed every other combination of colors I've ever tried. I don't even carry any other colors anymore.
