Stream Gages going away 7/1/17?
fishinwrench replied to Eric82's topic in General Angling Discussion
Their topo maps leave alot to be desired, the top lines and the bottom lines are kinda close.....But all those lines in between are so far off that it's truly a waste of time and more misleading than helpful. And their weather data is equally sketchy too. About the only thing they seem to be able to accurately assess is river data......And that's where they choose to take a poop. ? If upper level river data is not the LEAST important thing that they do then what is? And I wonder, did they make cuts there first? They appear to be deviating from their mission statement, do they not? -
You have the best wife ever! If there is one thing that I make sure to destroy immediately it is tackle shop receipts.

During the actual act of laying and fertilizing the eggs the fish (both male and female) do not actively feed. This amounts to one or maybe two days. Assuming you have children....Do you remember how long it was after giving birth that your bride started hollering for a double cheeseburger, strawberry shake, and super size fry's ? She probably ate pretty good the day her water broke to, didn't she?

Bigger fish have to eat more often, so during less than ideal conditions you are more likely to catch bigger (but fewer) fish. As conditions get better there are more smallish fish competing for your bait, and they can move pretty quick, so they beat the bigguns to your lure quite often. Have you ever caught a dink and had a 3-5 pounder follow it to the boat? I bet you have. And for every time you see that happen you gotta know that it happens 20+ times....You just don't see the pig. It might be possible to upsize your bait to the point that only the bigger fish can eat it, but I don't have the confidence in that theory to try it, mostly because I still enjoy catching 2 pounders and don't wanna pass up 10 of those in order to catch one 5 pounder.

Ok then. So besides river guages, what else does the USGS provide for me and you that is useful on a regular basis ? Might sound like a stupid question, but if they take away the guages then why do I need them ? Are weather reports going to get more accurate now that they have more money to throw at it? They gonna be able to predict earthquakes better? What do you reckon they need to do, that they weren't able to do because of the cost of some pretty darn important TO US river guages? How are we going to benefit from this decision ? All decisions are made for the benefit of some one or some thing, correct? Who benefits from this decision ? -

First Al says "you can thank the new Governor and the Senate body for that!" Then he says... "y'all stop bashing the Government for once. Geeze!" ? Al, are you getting old and shifty ? We still hate spotted bass today, right? Ok just checking. ?? -

Nobody's making anything up, Al. 400 dollar toilet seats and 70.00 ink pens in state and government office's are not a myth. The reputation is well deserved whether it is acknowledged openly or not. -
Exactly ! When things aren't working out and I'm at a loss as to what I should do, that's the time to just put the rod down, sit down and eat a sandwich or smoke a cigarette, or go for a boat ride. Better yet pick up the phone and call your wife.... It'll clear your mind, make her day, and score you some brownie points so that even if you fail to catch fish you'll still have something to look forward to later. ?? After a tough day I always figure out what I SHOULD have done later that night. Hindsight=20/20

Recently I downloaded the MOTV app so that I could watch the "exclusive coverage" of the MLF top finishers. This is where the camera is on the "winner" throughout the whole period and isn't cut or edited. I can tell you that watching guys like James Watson (who I think is a really cool guy by the way), Kieth Poche, Mark Rose, Lefebre, Palinuk, Chris Lane and several others including veteran Gary Klein.....Makes me pretty darn proud of myself. The boat control, the casting accuracy, the looking around and not paying attention when they should be, handling a good fish at the side of the boat.....And all kinds of other things. Honestly in some cases it's like watching a 12 year old fish. It truly left me thinking "Dude, how the hell did you get where you are in this sport?" It's way deeper than just someone having an "off day". Now Mike Iaconelli (even though his antics annoy me), and Greg Hackney, Denny Brauer, Mark Davis.....Those boys are on their game! The boat positioning is thought out, the casts aren't wasted and are on target, their eyes are focused where they need to be, ect. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I recognize a truly good angler when I see one.....Whether he catches a fish or not. Being truly good, or better than most, doesn't mean you're gonna win. It SHOULD.....But it doesn't.

Oh I'm sure they claim that the expense is a monster. Example: In order for me to get my mail I have to walk to the mailbox 6 days a week. You'd be blown away if you knew how much that costs me yearly. I can't just walk out there naked....I gotta have clothes, and shoes. Have to buy toe nail clippers or I won't be able to put socks on. I need nourishment, protein and carbs to trim those toenails, get dressed, put on shoes, and walk. Sometimes there are wasps around the mailbox...Gotta keep them killed off. Umbrella for rainy days. Snow shovel. Gloves. More protein and carbs. I might slip and fall....Band-Aids, Neosporin, and possibly medical attention. There was a copperhead out there once, and my eyes are getting bad....Need glasses or I might step on him. It adds up boys! If I could just eliminate having to walk to the mailbox I could save 24k per year ! -

I'm sure the outfitters would be willing to pick up the tab on the Niangua unless they are claiming that it "cost millions to keep them going". -
I'm on strike until the sun shines again. I'm sick of this depressing weather pattern we are hopelessly stuck in.

I knew there was the makings of a reality show here. I could just feel it.
-
There's a 96% chance that you're right.

I do, and so does Marty's Marine. Marty's is a little closer by road to the dam. 573-346-0023 and they are an actual Yamaha dealer so they would be more likely to have parts in stock.

I've had some really close calls while fishing, but the most dramatic lightning incident I have been a part of happened at a Super-cross race in Fulton county. Georgia. It wasn't even stormy that night and a huge bolt came down upon the bleachers just across from where we were sitting. Ambulances hauled 10-12 away and I think it killed 3. The funny....but not funny at all...part is that we were so stoned that at first we thought it was part of the show. Somewhat understandable if you've ever witnessed the Lazer light show at Stone Mountain.
-
No kidding! I don't want 6 people in my house.....much less in my boat.
-
Well why do they only spin one wheel? You've got one wheel trying to do all the work. Does Ford even offer a locker rear end on any of their trucks? If they have power to spare then spread some of that love to the other wheels and quit tearing up my driveway. ?
-
? Yeeeeah let's do some Ford bashing!!! There's a slight incline pulling into my place. Chevy's, Dodge's, and Toyota's wheel right in with boats in tow....no problem. But when you hear a wheel spinning and gravel flying you know there's a Ford guy pulling in. As long as they've been building trucks you'd think they'd have a rear-end differential that could go off pavement without embarrassing itself so bad.

Shrapnel is right, Pomme and LOZ are not in the same class. The thing I like about Pomme is you can actually take a piss whenever you want to.

Does her mama cook ? Farmers daughter? You'd better spill it before I start spreading rumors based upon my own fantasy's. "Becky? Oh she is doing well....she's dating a banker ya know!". ?

Nice haul ! I may get out tomorrow but I'm still chasing green bass. Hopefully the crappie and whites will still be on fire when I get around to them.
