  1. With the fungus popping (I can almost hear it) we headed out to a chanterelle spot from last year. Started finding many small ones. Then a couple of nice groups of larger mushrooms like these. It's to be expected that there are fewer this year due to the lack of rain in comparison to last year, However, the Folly Fungus Foragers scored on a nice bunch of chanterelles this evening.

MOPanfisher I'll have to just bring a jar when we go fishing ! Just let me know when you want the jam delivered.
  3. Got tired of waiting for my 6 pm conference call. Went out behind our lab and focused on orange and yellow! Found a couple of one and tow spots initially. Then found a larger group with bigger chants. Unlike some that may pass up these guys , I will harvest them when I can get them. Here's my total for 25 min in the woods. Now it's back to work for my call. Can't just spend all day in the woods until my wife gets home!
  4. I wanted to find some hedgehogs but not yet. I haven't had any minnows off my list... Yet! Pretty sure that the silversides I was catching in Delaware and Maryland would be good deep fried. Like the whitebait dishes I had in Ireland. Have to ket you know how they are if I start keeping them for the skillet.

    What's Cooking?

My betterhalf made a different recipe of strawberry jam this time with aged balsamic vinegar. Liked it better than her last recipe. Have to see if we can keep some for bartering☺.
  7. Nice bunch of mushrooms. We just got some heavy rain today. Can't wait to see what we can find by this weekend☺. Never did get out to water those chants since it rained today.

Squirrel was fantastic! Great recipe! Wish that I could say that I made this dish on my own. Would be good with rabbit if we had any that we could eat. Livie wouldn't be happy if Miss Puffington or Bun Bun ended up in the dutch oven. Billethead BBQ sauce got a rousing thumbs up from the Folly family☺! We have also been enjoying the gooseberry jam.
  9. BH Just saw this post today. How is he and his family doing?

I hope that everyone had a safe and happy Fourth! I finally got the nerve and the meat to try our hand at smoking ribs in the gas smoker the family gave me for father's day (Ok it was last Father's day!).My rub consisted of brown sugar, granulated garlic, thyme, Asian five spice, smoked paprika, and S&P. Had trouble getting the heat where I wanted (250 deg) and it kept creeping up to 275 to 300 deg. So the ribs cooked for about 4 1/4 hours. I cooked a slab of baby back and a slab of St Louis style ribs. I also added partially baked potatoes into the smoker and they went into potato salad that my oldest daughter made. Served the ribs with the potato salad and baked beans. Added a bit of Billethead brand BBQ sauce from Vernon CO Missouri to mine. After I suggested that my betterhalf and kids try that sauce as well, the packaged BBQ sauce never got opened .
  11. Great looking Carp! How common are mirrored carp here in the midwest? Do you catch your bigger fish ariund the spawn? Is there another time when large carp are more accessible?
  12. Dan Great job and report! You got on the fish and that makes the memories that last. Congrats again! Keep the smiles coming!

    What's Cooking?

Got out some frozen squirrels that we had squirrelled away back in Feb. Tried to get a couple of fresh ones, but no luck. These squirrels met a reprise of Hank Shaw's Sichuan rabbit recipe that I substituted the squirrel. Braised the squirrels in chicken broth (instead of water), soy sauce, onion, and ginger. They cooked at 300 deg for about 3 hours and were off the bone tender. I let the meat cool and then picked as much off the bones as possible. also removed any shot that I could find (My betterhalf did find one the hard way). I added sliced onions and julienned carrots to the recipe. I cooked the carrots and onions then heated the meat. Once the carrots were cooked, I removed the meat, carrots and onions before making the sauce. Sauce consisted of chili bean paste, black bean paste, sesame oil, and olive oil. Mixed the sauce with the meat and served over jasmine infused rice and topped with green onions and toasted peanut and sesame seeds.
  14. Went out yesterday with shotgun and mushroom bag. Found a about two dozen chanterelles that were sizeable enough for harvest. Still finding a bunch of little guys like the following. Talked to BH and may just go out and water these guys to get them to get bigger. No luck with the squirrels.
  15. Mike Good luck on the new job and the getting on the bass in TX! Stay positive. Sounds like a great opportunity! Post when you can.
  16. Great looking Crane Creek McClouds! Nice photos! Glad you had a decent trip to Crane Creek.
  17. 2sheds Great report and photos as always! Glad that you got back to MO to fish the wild trout streams!
  18. Norm Great trip report! I also love that kind of fishing. I bet that you could catch even more types of fish if you dropped your hooks size possibly down to 14 or 16. Get down to #20 and can get the darters that I am sure are present and accessible in the tributaries. Keep it up. Enjoy reading your trip reports.
  19. Sounds like he was treating it more like a spoon. If so differences in line weight or diameter could change the speed of the drop or have more flutter as it dropped.
  20. Went out this evening and only found some very small ones. I left them to grow a bit larger. Ground is nice and damp. A little more rain and they should be popping out around here. Then went to the dock to fish with Livie. She caught 14 crappie, one bass and a bluegill. I caught 13 crappie and three bass. We were tied for the evening.
  21. BH I went out last Sunday before we catfished and did not find any. Will have to go out this weekend. I'm off on Monday so can do a little more outside. I have not eaten any boletes here in MO. I'm pretty sure that we may have looked over several chestnut boletes last year since we saw so many unidentified boletes last year. . Hopefully we can find some chants like this one again this year. probably need a lot more rain. That was a meal in itself.
  22. Would have liked less of a commercial feel to the video. What a great fish! Makes my PB 5+ lb brown look like bait.
  23. Looks like you had a great day! Your grandson looks to be having a great time as well! Always a great day when there are fish on the line instead of video games on in the basement. Thanks for the report.
  24. MoCarp Very informative. I watched a lot of rough fishing shows while living in Northern Ireland. Didn't fish for them while I was there. I did get a chance at some decent common carp in the pond at my work. The carp were removed and we dredged that pond a couple of years ago. I've posted about trips with my daughter on that pond. When the carp were in the pond they were very skittish and would spook if you cast near them with any weight more than 1/16 oz sinker. I have only caught and landed just two. Each hit a redworm on a small Aberdeen hook, a small split shot all on 4# line. Each time I snuck up behind the fish milling in the shallows. Cast a foot in front of them and watched the fish follow the bait to the botttom. Once hooked both fish ran me all over that small pond. I would back reel to keep constant but light pressure on those fish with that light line. I only landed the two carp. The first was over 9 lbs. The largest was 12 lb 13 oz. Still my largest carp to date. Since then I left carp fishing and focused for many years on bass, trout, and panfish. With the last couple of years I have been more focused on multispecies fishing trips and rough fish are high on that list of targetted species. So I have been planning on some carp trips this year both in Missouri and also have a couple of spots in Maryland. Hope to post successful reports from those trips and possibly using some techniques that you described in this thread.
