As per the posters question, here is the last paragraph of an article. I typed in “why did Missouri quail numbers decline” and these 2 popped up. I did go ahead and read both articles. Both “habitat and predators” were both the biggest reasons for decline, with predators being the main factor. Without predators being in check, quail can’t survive to a decent population, but can survive without better than good habitat. I could only begin to think of how many birds in general “young” are lost yearly due to predators. Bobcats alone can play a major roll in an area. Factor in all of the other animals that love eating young birds, and I’m surprised we have as many as we do. Quail/turkey are at a huge disadvantage VS tree nesting birds, so we see their numbers decline to a much larger scale. Maybe scientists can twist the quails genetics and have them nest in trees.

It is great nesting habitat and encouraged by wildlife biologists, but on my last farm it didn’t seem to help as there were lots of river bottom areas that were used and provided better options. If planted with other cover, it does have its place. I was hired to brush hog 70 acres of pasture this summer, and the big bluestem heads were 7’ tall and thick. I mean thick. There was an area that was over run with it that birds would have had a hard time using it.

Johnson grass, thistle, knapweed, bluestem, etc. all play heck on areas where quail numbers thrived. With the over abundance of predators and invasion weeds, it’s almost impossible to get ahead of the curve. If i had another large farm “over 200 acres” i would start with fence row protection, 12’ wide native cover grasses between fence rows and trees, supply strips between ag areas “if ag is planted”, and do lots and LOTS of predator control.

Oh my, my better 1/2 asked why i was laughing so much. Welp, i read her your answer, which cost me 10 minutes of her informing me of why YOU are wrong. 😁

Well with todays newest technology, they are making these little blue pills that will make you and sweet potato pie feel all young again. They also act as diet pills, so a win win for ya, oneshot. One thing you can’t do tho, is just give it “one shot”. 😉

What i like about it is no July or August tournament. I am doing the same with our bass club. To many boats out, to hot out, and gotta pull fish from the depths.

Do any of you prep/till your gardens in the fall, instead of doing it all in the spring? Noticed my neighbor down the road tilled his under last month. I have my chicken coop on top of mine for the winter to add that fertilizer. Just curious.

I feel the same wrench. Up until 4 or 5 years ago i absolutely loved anything under 40 degrees “i sweat easy”. Lately anything below 50 and I’ve got a hoodie on. Tho i do still wear shorts year round working outside “legs rarely get cold”.

Being in a rush yesterday when i put them on, I didn’t notice they had settings for heat. It wasn’t to cold out in the blind, but my feet were sweating on the high mode. Going to have them on for this afternoon hunt. Gotta go do some work stuff this morning. Like most things nowadays, there is an app you can control your socks with your phone. Go figure.

Wrench, if you would shower more than bi-weekly that dog wouldn’t eat up your socks. They like smelly stuff.

Is that a food plot i see?

Those chicken and noodles make me hungry every time, even if i did just eat an hour earlier. 😁 Had some squirrel and dumplings recently that my brother made in the crock pot that were some of the tastiest i have eaten. Yes sir. I have them at least 4 days a week. These are some that i brought into the house before the freeze that were still producing. I have 32 zipper bags of chopped, and 8 zippers of whole in the freezer for chili, stews, etc. Next year I’m planning on upping the plant count.

So as i was walking out the door to sit in the woods today, i heard the Amazon lady drop off a package. After this weekend telling my lady that my feet were cold, she did as usual and had something sent. I put them on, turned on the power button, and never had cold feet again. I think i will like these.

I look on here and see your meals that you put lots of time in, and here i am posting Spam sandwiches and this here leftover meatloaf, fried taters, rice and corn before i hit the woods. I do love to cook, and up until she kicked me from the kitchen for, her words, “stop coming in here and taking over every time i start cooking”, i cooked most days. Now, on her request, i stand back and watch mostly.

Wow, what a looker. Read about them online, but didn’t know one of our own was using one to hunt. How does it differ from lets say a .22 or .25 as far as air cfm’s go? How heavy is the slug? Do you know the speed or kinetic energy?
