  1. Don't actually love the place anymore and doubt we will go back more than one time this year. It is an easy pace for the Mrs. to wade fish and Montauk hasn't been anywhere up to what it usually is. Wife really enjoyed the day and I ended up helping a couple other youngsters catch fish. One was jig fishing off the whistle bridge and another was beating the water with his new fly rod. That made it a positive day for me and a good day for those I helped.
  2. Wife and I fished Sunday and stayed in zone 2 with the wind being pretty stout most of the day. We did catch a lot of fish with maybe 20 little brown trout in the mix. As with Allstar's report we did notice a couple instance of folks fishing in zone 2 with baits that weren't legal. One family of a Mom,Dad, and 3 small children were sitting on the bank throwing power nuggets and catching a few fish. I spoked to the Dad as I assumed it was still an illegal bait in zone 2. He assured me he was not breaking in law so I walked on by not wanting to create a scene with 3 little kids looking to be less than 6-7 years old. Another guy fishing on the Whistle Bridge with the old rubber tube jig told me they told him at the park store it was legal in zone 2 when they sold it to him. He hadn't caught any thing so we fixed him up with something that was legal and he had caught 3 by the time I left. Maybe should have went to look for a conservation officer but rarely have any success finding one.
  3. Caught a garter snake in the backyard to show the Mrs.She took it into the house to show the kids who were early teenagers at the time. I could hear them yelling for me as "Dad, Mom has a snake in the house." Years later a neighbor lady had left her back door open and a snake had got in her utility room. She called the house looking for me only I was on the train at work. Susie went over and caught the snake and was headed out of the house when the police and animal control officer showed up.
  4. Hit one of my regular spots today and found 57 from about an inch to 3 inches tall. Did my usual 3 mile hike and found the majority in two places. Having some tonight with some baked chicken the Mrs. is fixing now. Might have to take a nap after the dishes are done
  5. Nice work by all, appeared to swim off like a champ!
  6. Great looking fish -hope it survives!
  7. When our kids first started fishing the trout parks, we would often use a wooly-worm spinner with enough weight to cast and keep it down . They caught enough to keep them happy and the casting made for good practice when they started jig and then fly fishing. Did you get them out to Engler park any for the trout fishing? Good spot to practice with enough panfish to keep the catch rates decent and enough other activities if the fishing slows.
  8. Probably some of those ruffians from Cantwell!
  9. Good story Al. I still have a 50+ year old Crosman Arms V-350 bb gun that you pump the barrel. Still fairly accurate and I give the squirrels heck with it. Doesn't shoot hard enough to kill them but keeps them off the bird feeder for a little.
  10. We used to find wild asparagus along Hwy. 32 outside of Bismarck. Wife loves it and usually got poison ivy along with her asparagus and end up going to the Doctor. Not sure if it was worth the effort. Brother and several others found mushrooms in the last 2 days but no luck at our favorite spot yet.
  11. Two good reports but the first was the best. Positive thoughts and continually in our prayers.
  12. Fished the park and the upper portion from the cable down about one half a mile. As usual on the Current and Montauk, the floods have rearranged a lot of the holes. Two big pine trees were across the stream below the cable and the section below the last cabin and lagoon was washed out and too deep too wade. Didn't see as many fish in the river or park but the stream was full and the wind hampered visibility. Several good browns in both sections but not as many as I've seen on some trips. Might have been better off fishing the deeper holes with a spinning rod instead of a fly rod too!
  13. The first time Susie was diagnosed with cancer our youngest 2 were in their early teens. It was tough on the whole family for a good while. With her love for fishing and being outdoors as it was and still is , on days that she felt like doing something outside we gave it our our best effort to do so. The chemo and radiation took it's toll the longer she had to endure it. Took off work whenever I could and always when I was needed and had many a sleepless night . Our thoughts and prayers for Mary and you for a speedy and complete recovery and a clean bill of health.
  14. Always treat you good at Plateau- it's long way from where we live but always try to stop and spend some money when we are close. And those flies look great!
  15. I bet Jimmy will like the name of those flies!

The finished product all sliced up nice got my attention real fast! Got to looking on line at different recipes instead of just asking on here. Thanks Chief and Ness.
  17. Motel rooms are usually fine-the ones we've stayed in have 2 full size beds and a shower with 8-10 channels on the tv. Don't have coffee machines in the room but all are within a short walk to the lodge. Little brother stayed in one room that he thought had a musty smell to it but only problem we've ever had was during the winter season when the heat didn't work well in our room. Rooms are cheaper at the motels in Licking and Salem did have a Holiday Inn Express but it is called something else now and you have anywhere from a 15-20 minute drive to those motels. Showers have good flow and lots of hot water after a hard day of fishing.
  18. Getting out on the water is good-catching a bunch of fish is great! Thanks for the report and pictures.
  19. Hey Al, the guy known as Foghorn on the Ozark Anglers is actually me-Jeff Tiefenauer. Will keep Mary and you in our daily prayers.

  20. Al, our prayers for you and Mary! Susie is a two time breast cancer survivor and is mighty tough. Growing up with the brother's that Mary has,I know she is tough enough to handle it too! As Smallie and others have stated, you both must stay positive and focus on Mary's health and recovery.
  21. Thanks for the report -we were gong to stop at Bennett on the way back from the opener at Roaring but had some business to attend to.
  22. We had alerted the Highway Patrol to be on the lookout for 2 suspicious looking characters who are known trout fishing terrorist's. Only picture that I had that resembled them was of the two Muppet guys-Waldorf and Statler!
  23. Laker, the 2nd day would have been ideal for you and Corky. Still a lot of good fish swimming when we left. Still catching those browns on a size #18 egg while Danny caught one of the browns on a #20 emerger. Fish was suspended close to the surface and took the fly on the 2nd cast. He managed to tie the tiny fly on by himself without his son or I doing it for him! Wish you would have come on down.
  24. Did a little research and got the name and address of the gentleman who caught the big fish. Was hoping to get a phone number but wasn't listed so will just send him something in an envelope. Lives in Granby, Missouri if anybody on the forum knows the guy who tied for big fish honors at Roaring. Thanks
  25. Thought I'd try to give a short report on the opening day at fishing at Roaring. Guess the rain early on kept the numbers down as the park wasn't that crowded when the 6 in our group arrived. We had scouted the upper end of the park and got an idea where we would fish . By 730 a.m., the group had landed 5 lunkers from 3.5# to almost 7#. By 1130 the total had risen to 8 big fish with the biggest fish in the running for the derby prize. A gentleman from Stark City caught a fish that weighed the same shortly before noon so now the big fish title has a tie. A flip of the coin determined the winner and ol' lucky himself won the prize. Now I need some info on the guy from Stark City if anybody on the forum knows who it could be. Will try to contact the Park/and or Cassville Chamber of Commerce as I would like to share the prize with him. The 2nd day was beautiful and we caught another 4 big fish-all were browns and all were released. The Governor from Missouri was there to fire the opening round and fished with 2 of our group. One of the new guys caught his first ever lunker and the youngest in our group caught his personal best rainbow and also got his first C&R patch. Hated to leave Wednesday afternoon but all we all had either work, school, or prior commitments for Thursday.
