  1. I do use different blades at times - sometimes orange or yellow or chartreuese works better on Spots and Smallies more than Largemouths. The tip about Great Lake Smallies works on our reservior Smallies and Spots, too - burning a compact but heavy spinnerbait in hot colors can get the Bass fired up in certain conditions.
  2. Try the Series 3 XD - sometimes it IS better then the 'Wart.http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Strike_King_Pro_Model_3XD_Crankbaits/descpage-SK3XD.html I've caught all three Black Bass species on it, and a couple of bonus Walleye's, too.
  3. Not having your own boat sucks, but you should follow Mitchs good advice about calling one of the outfitters and see what advice they have. Even if you have to get with a larger group you could just wait five or ten minutes after the last person launches and then follow the group a little ways behind - I catch fish right behind other fishermen on the James all the time.
  4. I see him out there sometimes - but I keep my distance as I'm infamous enough around here. I could do without the "toss the Bass" release.
  5. I take my solo canoe out in that cove sometimes - it's usually fine and fishermen are usually pretty good about not runnning by very close - but "pleasue boaters" are another story. During the week it should be fine.
  6. I ran out time on my post to put colors - I like more transluscent minnow colors when it's cloudy or early/late like the Pro Blue, and brighter colors like sexy shad or clown when it's sunny. My best color for sunny days is a brighter orange belly/silver sides/blue back - the 110 has a color like that but I can't rememeber the name.
  7. Squad Minnow is great, I like the smaller #8 XRap, and the old but still killer #10 size Husky Jerk, too. If you want a bigger lure (three trebles and 1/2-ounce) try the XCaliber EEratic Shad. It sits nose down like the Vision 110, but has a profile like a Rogue or Husky Jerk but only cost around 7 or 8 bucks. Or you can get the knock-off 110 Junior now, too. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Luck-E-Strike_Rick_Clunn_RC_STX_Jerkbait/descpage-LKRCSTK.html
  8. If you stop right now you'll miss the best fishing of the year over the next month. I have two pools on the James I almost always catch an 'Eye out of. usually not very big - but interesting.
  9. What a nice looking GSP! I'll pass the word.
  10. I usually say that's one of my reasons I like a solo canoe better than a 'Yak - less likely to lose stuff. BUT - I did lose a casting rod/reel combo with one of my favorite spinnerbaits further downstream a couple of weeks ago!
  11. I thought shots of running water ( But Joe, we filmed at the waters LEVEL, check THAT out) were taboo. So... we left them out. And this is on topic?
  12. I'm game - but only if it comes with the Grail.
  13. I'll try cranks in the clearest water - you never know when a certain lure will be "the ticket". I like super shallow "wakers" and ones that run 1-foot deep to run through the riffles. Some of my better Summer fish come from the current seem right at the top of the riffles.
  14. I don't do the belly hook skirt thing (but I still need to try it) but I do put hackle on the tail treble of a lot of tighter wobble cranks (like a Shad Rap or Salmo Hornet) I think it does get a few more fish versus the plain hook version.
  15. For river fishing I use a 3600 box with everything separated into different compartment. For wading it's a smaller one, and for the big boat it's a 3700.
  16. That's very true - as someone who fishes both often (although more on the Finley) I'm always reminded of the lower James when fishing lower Beaver close to Bull Shoals. Bigger than the Finley for sure.
  17. All really good advice here - I used to use a Canon SLR back in the film days but since digital I just use a point and shoot for the regular "grip and grin" shots. Too much of a hassle to dig something like that out every time I want to shoot a quick picture like Al said. But if you want the best pictures possible - you gotta go with quality versus ease of use and the "I dropped in in the river- oh well, it was only 80 bucks".
  18. Yeah - I'm sorry about not being clear - I got some Rapala DT4's and DT6's equipped with those hooks as a "promo" type thing back in 2004 or whatever when they first came out. I tried them but like I said - major snag magnet and just don't work the way I like my lures to work. I think you'd be better served by two good regular trebles on that lure. Of course, they're still promoting them as "the best thang EVAAAARRRRRR!!!!" or whatever.http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/VMC_Sureset_1X_Strong_Treble_Hook_4pk/descpage-VMCSRTR.html
  19. Any color is good - I like the Rainbow Trout color a lot. If there's pretty good current I like to cast across the current and holding my rod tip high, let the current "swing" the spoon downstream in an arc. Another good trick is to hold the rod tip up and then lower it quickly to throw slack in the line - the spoon will wobble down until the line goes tight again unless a fish nails it right then - and they often do.
  20. I like most Rapala Lures but the ones that come with those I clip the extra long hook point off. Not a fan - too many snags.
  21. There's a couple of ranchers on the upper Finley and Beaver Creek that string wire all the way across - illegal but it's done all the time.
  22. I use suspending jerkbaits year-round. Sometimes it's a faster retrieve and sometimes letting it sit like you do in cold water works really well around isolated vertical cover like a lone tree on a steep drop off or a bridge support. Right after the topwater bite dies you can sometimes getting them on jerkbait a little deeper, too.
  23. I like Sneaky Petes and regular poppers (foam or Deer Hair) and Clouser Minnows. I also tye an unnamed little fly that looks like a tiny finesse jig with a rabbit strip trailer - that my bottem dredger.
  24. If you're after numbers it's the best game in town. For bigger Smallmouth - yes, it can work - but often I fish behind people throwing small grubs, tubes, and plastic worms and absolutely clean up on bigger fish throwing bigger, more aggressive presentations.
  25. Big Smallmouths in the White River chain of lakes are hard to pattern - even with heavy pressure not that many big Smallies are caught - but I do like the Bull Shoals trout-fed monster idea.
