  1. Used to fish Chain of Rocks all the time! Miss that place. Caught lots of sauger, walleye, wipers and whites there as a kid. One Saturday in February these good ol' boys were doing a massive fry. They were frying anything that swam in the river. I walked by and they said "hey kid come try this." I said "I'm good." "No, try it." So I eased over and had one of the best pieces of fried fish I've ever eaten. No idea what it was, but boy it was good.
  2. Jealous of your fishing, DJ! Wish I could join you. Isn't it weird how the night bite goes? Can be dead for hours then they turn on for 30 minutes and hold on. Or vice versa. It's fun. That is definitely some type of nest raider so good riddance. I prefer chupacabra though..
  3. The clarity is very subpar in plastic lenses compared to glass. And the distortion in plastic lenses is greater than glass (which has zero distortion). And the UV protection is lower. I was a cheap sunglasses guy for a long time and then I got the Costa glass lenses and I will never go back, in terms of fishing that is.
  4. Whatever you do, get glass lenses. I have Costas and like them. Everyone is saying the Bajio's are really good, though. May have to get a pair soon. I have a blue tint for fishing and an amber for driving/whatever. Just avoid plastic at all costs.
  5. I'd say a gut hooked fish with the line clipped has a higher chance of surviving than the ones released by some of the people handling them. Boga grips splitting their jaws, dropped on the hot boat, tailing gloves, etc. I'd bet a lot of money a lot of those trout released and "swim off strong" don't do so hot.
  6. When I was on the White guys were chumming with liver and drifting with them. Pretty common practice, which I did not now. Saw a bunch of liver buckets trashed throughout, too.
  7. I'm sure the Italian fish in there will eat the spaghetti and meatballs.
  8. Small midges are your best friend. There's a great shop in Durango, CO that's worth going to. Duranglers is the name. They guide on the San Juan, Animas, and high country streams there. Durango is an awesome town. If you don't want to go up there, Abe's is a good place as well. It's a crowded river, but there are some giants in there. I fished in about four years ago when I was traveling to Farmington, NM for work.
  9. We use a lot of older 2-strokes duck hunting. Those things are workhorses and tanks. Most of the issues we encounter we can fix very easily, and for cheap. And the smell of 1980s 2-stroke firing up at 4:30 am in the cold air is a smell I'll love forever. Mmmmm
  10. It's because they dig on the bottom to eat scuds. Most research says they are not eating the moss, but the bugs in the moss. Moss is just collateral damage. They aren't capable of processing plants, like most animals outside of cervids. Evolution is cool..
  11. Something with your dad's name in it would be good. Jerry's Tackle Shop, Jerry Lilley and Co. Fly Shop, etc.
  12. I believe it's Wendell Beard in a 1970s picture with a bunch of trout around 10 lbs mounted. Sounds like you guys had it good back in the day.
  13. And stocked trout. They really care about them.
  14. Love it @Travis Swift. That's a good carp! lol
  15. Ha! Ok old-ish pics. Always forget about all the chronologically gifted folks here..
  16. Cleaning again and found some old photos. Probably all around 1996-1998.
  17. Yep. I remember the days of Busch Wildlife being amazing. Now there's a dedicated FB group to fishing there. Just the times we live in. As always, though, the onus comes on the fishermen to keep the places good.
  18. Lol that's exactly how I feel. Why don't we just leave fishing as fishing?
  19. I'm always conflicted on these "slams." Cool to showcase the resource(s) but the cynical part of me sees the pressure and increase in people as a negative to some of these great areas. I think it's a bad idea overall, but we'll see. Maybe it will be the opposite and folks will be good caretakers. Just hasn't been my experience.
  20. Great fish! Making me have fomo. Sad I missed the gates open, but it looks like the fish are fat and happy.
  21. He's amazingly doing well. Improving each day. Very, very lucky thus far
  22. Don't really do things publicly but kind of at a critical moment for my Uncle Steve. He had a stroke Monday morning and survived by mere minutes. Carotid artery was completely blocked from the clot thrown. Surgeon got him stable. He's doing okay now. Starting to get feeling on his left side, can swallow and talk. But there's a long road ahead for him. He's been an active guy his whole life. Still plays (played?) softball and fishes and hunts regularly. He taught me a lot about Taney with the rest of my family. Could use some good thoughts and well wishes. He's only 56. Shame. Here we are on Briarwood's dock a long time ago.
  23. You paint the heads? If so, I'd buy some of those from you. I can tie but I can't paint detail to save my life.
  24. I believe the water temperature and lack of consistent flow (like the minimum flow below Bull Shoals on the White) are the culprits. They started studying it in the '70s so there should be some good literature out there.
  25. Wonder if that was the big brown you'd been seeing? Hopefully it survives. If not, way she goes. Just need to educate folks on proper handling and hopefully they learn. That is so odd with the scuds and trophies. It almost sounds like they were running around in giant schools, eating in one stretch, then going to another. Pretty cool, honestly. Or, like I was thinking, maybe it's the water itself. Maybe dead spots of low DO, high leaf tannins, etc. I have no idea, just thinking aloud. Time to do some research. I miss fishing. Haven't fished since I started the new job. Time to change that soon..
