  1. Buy a kayak and use it. Fly rod saltwater reds. I want to go back to the Eleven Point and fish the North Fork of the White for the first time.
  2. This thread has been hijacked. In a good way. I used to fish alone a lot. As i've gotten older i realized (45 now), I like to fish with a companion but it has to be the right person. Not in my business. Not necessarily near me when wade fishing. Just company on the drive down and when having a break or eating lunch. Talking about what's working and such. Other than that, by myself please.
  3. Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
  4. I have similar shading problems. I'm investing in a chainsaw. I enjoyed last year's thread and plan to participate in this year's.

    Flood Photos

Agreed. They are wasting (and have wasted) the benefits of modern weather forecasting.

    Flood Photos

The Niangua CF3 meter at Windyville in Central Missouri stopped at its operating limit 34,500 with a gauge height of 22 feet. That was 10 hours ago . . . .Still raining.
  7. Fantastic.
  8. The spring rises more slowly and comes down much quicker than the river. The river below the spring is susceptible to quick floods and muddy water. It drops and clears fairly quickly but can be a waste of time for a few days after a big rain. The spring is almost always fishable.
  9. Fished today below the 64 Bridge and at some private water downstream. The weather was an early Christmas present. Late December never felt so good. The river is in fantastic shape. Flows are up, but the water is clear. When we arrived, we heard from a couple of locals that the fishing was great yesterday, but slow this morning. A day late . . . Story of my life. Went to work with small caddis and mayfly nyphms (#16 and #18). It was slow but there were fish to be had. Needed some shot as you had to be ticking the bottom to get bit. The several rainbows we caught were fat and very spunky. Later in the day we swung and stripped streamers. Again, not great action but there were some fish. Got a great surprise late this afternoon, a solid 17 inch Brown! Haven't seen a good one in a while and this one was a football. I hope everyone gets out to enjoy the weather. Merry Christmas.

    Winter Hoppers

i don't use "indicators" unless you call a hopper an indicator
  11. Target the whites. The hybrids run with them. It's a numbers game. Catch enough whites and you'll stumble into the hybrids. The windblown points and banks advice in the fall is gold.
  12. Clear Creek runs right along the highway up the draw into the mountains. I've fished it several times. You can pull off the highway and trek down to the creek. There are brook trout in the pools and riffles. Hope you have some decent boots. lots of chunk rock on steep banks. But lots of access. PM me if you want more info. Anywhere above the brewery along the highway will work. Cab could handle if you arrange a pickup time.
  13. Cabelas gear has been very good to me. They are very willing to refund your money if you are disappointed. Take the plunge. Little risk.

    What's Cooking?

Mr. Billethead, do you mind sharing the recipe for this soup?
  15. Fishing was good last weekend with both #12 olive woolies and leeches and #18 bh pheasant tails. Being on the bottom was key.
  16. I've bought my MO fishing license online the last 3 years. I like the fact that I can print multiple copies and stick them in all of my tackle boxes, fly vests, fly boxes, etc.. Never have to worry about not having a copy around.
  17. Fantastic fish. Great to see the scud video too.
  18. I got a good tip from a guide that might help. Take a small forceps and fasten it to the bend of your fly hook. It makes for a stable platform to put the line through. Then leave the forceps attached as it will provide the weight to keep the line taught while you finish a clinch knot. You should not release the forceps until you are done tying. Two good benefits: the weight of the forceps provides tension to make managing the light line easier. Second, if you drop the fly, you wont lose it. It will be right there when you pick up the forceps.
  19. I agree with this.
  20. I love the Lake City, CO area in the late summer. I'm blessed with an impromptu trip this year the week before labor day. I'll post a report when I'm back.
  21. That is a bruiser. Very jealous.
  22. Use braid with a leader. Line twist becomes less a problem. Lots of good spinning options from Pflueger and Shimano. I have President and Asaro models that are 6 years old that Ive done no maintenance on that are as good today as they were out of the box (less the finish and paint chips). Im careful and not that hard on gear though.
  23. Id get on one of the jetties in zone 1 and have him cast cross current and strip a jig, wooly or crackleback. Just cast and reel slowly back. It will be good.
  24. Check the Bargain Barn link on the Cabelas website. Cabelas label rods are good quality and they have a liberal return policy if damaged. There are good deals on the Three Forks, Tradition, Stowaway and LSI series rods most of the time.
