  1. Canon Rebel is a great choice for a semi professional DSLR at around $500 for the body and a basic AF lens.
  2. Yes, but it is filtered and scrubbed and regulated by the EPA. Burning fields are raw smoke and lots of it. It darkens the skies for miles and hangs in the air till a good front comes thru and blows it out.
  3. There you go, GIGGING does no harm to the environment. Other than to kill the fish it touches. We can use worms and crickets and use rocks for weights, as long as they are rocks from the stream we are fishing as opposed to rocks from the stream over the hill with rock snot on it or zebra mussels. We can use rocks as long as there is not a mudpuppy hiding under them, then we will have to look for something else for weight.
  4. Migratory birds like ducks and geese fly of a night during the migration cycles, so it could happen since they are in flocks and playing follow the leader. But I doubt it would be that big of a problem, about the same chance of them swallowing my lead sinker.
  5. What about dry flies?
  6. Burning Fields Cause Massive Pileup. Every year it is the same old thing in SE MO, farmers burning off fields 2 times a year, thick smoke, chemicals released into the air, and now, a huge pileup involving 14 cars. The smoke clouds the skies, chokes the air, and causes more pollution in and hour than most factories produce in a year. But there is no regulation of it, it is a common practice. It happens all across southern Missouri an Northern Ark. If there is a wind, it drifts for miles, and affects many people. What is to gain? Save a little fuel instead of tilling the vegetation into the ground? Increase production by getting a crop in sooner or planting the ground twice a year? The article states that it controls disease in plants, but what about all of the chemicals it releases in the burn? What about the herbicides, fertilizers, and whatever they spray on them to mature them? And the heat damages essential bacteria in the soil that help the soil to be productive. With all of the regulation, why does everyone seem to turn their head on this one? Lord knows I am against big Government, but with all of the assaults on Car Companies, Manufacturing, Mining, and other industries, how does this go un-noticed?
  7. Labor Day usually kicks off a new season for me, time to get the duck stuff ready. The best part about duck hunting is making new toys for the season that starts a few weeks later. Teal Season opens on 9/11 this year and I spent most of the weekend getting the duck stuff in order. Redid the portable lake blind, put the blind back on the johnboat, and came up with a new camo scheme for the yak. In the past, I have just used some leafy camo and burlap and it worked fine. There are times when I tuck up into grass and reeds and need a different camo pattern. So a trip to the Hobby Lobby for some Raffia, some bungee cord, zipties, and here it is. Removable camo for the weeds, it all comes off on 4 bungee cords and hangs in the shed when not in use for about $10. Now all I have to do is check the deke cords, charge the robo duck, and head out to some favorite lakes for early teal and bass this weekend. Nice thing about teal season, you shoot them off the lake, stow the guns, fold down the blind and hit the fish.
  8. Interesting, a MO game law for a non federal game animal should not result in "double violations" I would think. If you violate a game law with a federal animal like a duck, it does. Must be some hidden clause about the violation taking place on federal land. Reading the rule 16 U.S.C. §§ 3372(a)(1) and 3373(d)(2), it appears they must have been successful in taking at least one deer in order for the violation to occur. WOW. Any lawyers figure that one out? I wonder how the appeal is going? Somebody was going to way to much trouble to kill a deer, all you have to do is drive down a back country road on any night with a heavy duty bumper and knock one out of the road. Or if you are lazy, just drive up and down the road and pick up the carcasses of the ones others have bumper stunned. Instead of investing all the money they did with the dogs, electronics, 4 wheelers, time and effort, you could have traded that all for some nice Angus beef.
  9. Nice big pigs with beautiful colors. I envy you, wish I was there.
  10. At least he got the "dumb Liberals" in before it closed.. That always torques someone on here.
  11. Don't twist, if there is a grain of sand in there, it will make a cork screw pattern that will cause more problems in the future. Pull straight.
  12. That has some relevance to this post. Shufflers are the reason we don't always post the streams we had success in. We don't want others "shuffling" on over to them...
  13. I have made alot of lead weights, bullets, and round balls for a sling shot when I was a kid with my uncle in his enclosed basement in St. Louis. He had an ample supply of lead water pipes that were pulled from buildings in the city. In chemistry class we played with mercury all of the time, used to roll it around on my hand. I think we even used it to separated out some other metals college. Now, you find an old mercury thermometer, and a hazmat team has to respond and dispose of at least an acre of ground to clean it up. I had a Mickey Mouse watch with glow in the dark hands that really made the geiger counter tick. I don't doubt the toxic effects of mercury, lead, or the little atomic particles that made our watches glow and the geiger counters tick in class. We have come a long way in controlling our damage to the environment, but this may be too much. But we must remember, The Government is only here to help us.
  14. I assume it is a graphite rod with non metallic ferrules. Grab each section with opposing hands about 6 inches from the ferrule and push the rods apart. If it still does not work, try squatting, grasp the rod about 6 inches from the ferrule, place under your knees and use your knees to separate the rod sections. If you still have one stuck, grab a friend and do a little tug of war. Ice or cold water on one section, the male end will sometimes cause enough contraction to break them free. As far as lube, use a little wax that is made for the ferrules or nothing at all. Main thing is to keep the ferrules clean and don't use much force to seat them when you put the rod together. Oil from you nose or any oily lube just grabs more grit and makes things worse. One little grain of sand can really cause some damage to a graphite ferrule or a metal one for that matter.
  15. What about the wind?
  16. Where is Eric1978, did Ness scare him off?
  17. Teal season opener next weekend. Doves are open now.
  18. I saw one today you can wear like sunglasses and film up to 60 minutes for about $170.
  19. There was a bunch of oversize loads clogging up the roads Friday carrying some kind of white thing with a name on it. I googled it and shazam, it was the housing for a wind mill. The blades went up a few months ago. Somebody is eating up the free cheese. Windmills are a hazard to waterfowl, but much like duck blinds placed the same place year after year, they will adapt.
  20. I did one on Sarah Palin that drug out longer than Phil, I think that may have been the first red button.
  21. Probably there because of the Holiday, overtime pay. Of course, someone may have dropped a dime on a poacher.
  22. Since their intro last year, they have been the hottest defense round out there for personal defense. 45 was the last to be released and I think it came out in May this year. Special designed bullet cavity that performs after puncturing clothing, controlled expansion, low flash, etc. It has the polymer forcing cone in the hollow point to make it expand like the big game bullet leverevolution ammo but still protects the integrity of the bullet. Its a Black Talon on steroids.
  23. Puddy! Are you worried about Ness's opinion and not everyone elses? I was going to use some SS's but I was afraid he may scold me too....
  24. I was in Cabela's today and surprisingly enough, nothing to be found regarding the lead issue in the store. And I was all over the fishing dept. They did have some Hornady Critical Defense loads in 45 acp finally. We have not been able to get them at the shop yet, too high of a demand.
