  1. If the timing was better, I might have joined you -- not too bad a drive for me. Haven't shot at ducks in a long time.
  2. Good post. It's human nature to dumb things down and blame everything on a single cause, and it drives me nuts. Can't watch or read the news without being swamped with examples.
  3. Seems like I remember they did send some letters and artifacts back to Jefferson as they went along and maybe even received some back. But, yeah, there certainly wasn't regular correspondence. This convo has me wanting to re-watch the Ken Burns documentary or reread Undaunted Courage. It is truly amazing what they did, the discoveries made and the knowledge they brought back.

And, how do we know he's a king??

A king, eh? Well, I didn't vote for him
  7. What's that speckly looking fish in the 5th picture?
  8. Pretty cool. I suppose the ‘modern-day Lewis and Clark’ comment was inevitable. But L&C dragged them up to MT before coming back down.

That's exactly what I thought. Can't really draw that conclusion from a found tag.
  10. I say -- encourage your kids to find things they love to do. If it's not exactly what you wish, you're the one that needs to adapt. It's most important that they love something and that they find happiness and fulfillment. It's not always a straight line.
  11. Dang! Glad that you're ok. On the bright side -- you've got the makings of the best derned avatar on OA ever right there!

    What's Cooking?

900 pages! Got some frozen scallops at Costco. As with all frozen stuff I’m a little relieved when I thaw it and it smells good. These were really good. Sautéed in butter and oil. Carrots with butter and maple syrup glaze. Lightly fried potato wedges. Microwaved the taters, cut them into wedges and quick fried in some butter. I like this approach—the inside is creamy, just a little crisp on the outside. Should have oriented the scallops to the front of the plate for the pic. They look tiny back there. 😄 All was delicious.
  14. I think your OA body of work would preclude you from membership in many organizations.
  15. Yeah, it’s kinda goes against what you’d assume but those brookies are native to the Appalachians too and extend way down into what you’d think is hot southern water.
  16. No, they’re native to NE Iowa and the rest of the Driftless Area as far as I know. Not real up to speed on whether they’ve been reestablished.

That reminds me of a recipe my baby brother did/does. Carrots in Seven Up. I need to dig that one out. Good stuff.
  18. @fishinwrench Some funny stuff, as usual. But kidding aside — I think it’s a shame to unnecessarily injure any fish you’re planning to release. Bass can handle some jaw flexing but a trout’s jaw is more fragile, as you know. Hate to see you make light of it. If you read the original post, those brookies aren’t stockers. You do know they’re native to that area, right? So, yeah they’re kinda special in my opinion. And they’re protected. I do agree that the handling of tournament bass is an issue, but that’s just misdirection in this context.
  19. Thanks. I didn’t want to say it, but...😄 I do feel sorry for reservoir bass caught in a fishing contest too.
  20. Hate to be a negative Nancy, but i think it’s worth mentioning... I see a lot of flexed jaws, hanging fish, etc. I suppose these were released, but they look to have endured a lot of stress before that. Stress that was mostly related to getting a picture ...for what... Us? Maybe forgo the pictures in the future, think about the fish’s well-being and enjoy the catch as a victory between it and you.
