  1. @Quillback Jeff! We need a reporter on the ground. Not far from you. Surely you can miss one day of fishing to attend and tell us about it. Take lots of pictures and video. World Champion Squirrel Cook Off | Facebook

    What's Cooking?

DANG! One should be using a vintage skillet though 🤣
  3. Thanks Rick, I like to eat the critters I take and don't like to demolish them.
  4. And again I went this morning. Pat volunteered to work a couple days so I was Solo. A bit slower today and it took me until 10:00 to get the last bird. I was more picky with my shots. One collared dove in the limit also. Shot way better slowing down too. Less than a box today by one shell 😆. 1.6 shells per bird average. Not bad considering that the national average is 5 to 7 shots per bird. Cleanest bunch not shot up so this batch will be bacon wrapped and over charcoal and wood. I dropped three in the pasture with this guy. I had to be careful with him.
  5. Not everyone has private places to hunt. Same with the duck parks and trout parks. From what I can tell they do a good job managing for dove and quail there and for other species. I made a trip with @duckydoty one time in the middle of the week. We did pretty good and saw many birds. @curtisce went and actually got a dove band.
  6. I'll add another picture of my Wing woman when she was just a my Wing girl. She was just 18 in this picture. Right around a month after we got married. I was 19. I told her a few minutes ago you have come a long way baby. Circa September 1977. Good grief.😆
  7. It really was. When you are young you are tough and will endure some stuff.
  8. The bear is still around, Had a full mount. The ticks and mosquitoes were really bad on that hunt. To this day if you part the bear hair there are petrified tick carcasses that went through the tanning process. When we hunted used 100 percent deet to fight the skeeters. Tried to use a headnet but they found their way in and you had them buzzing around inside the net. So we slathered out faces too. Those mosquitoes came in hard. You could feel them hit your skin. They would try to get you but the deet would run them off. They would be a cloud of them around your face.
  9. 40 years ago. I was a young 26 year old. Spring season for Bear. My friend Kevin (21) went with. We have a small patch of timber next to our house that goes into a field. We practiced there. Tied small round bales of hay between trees about bear height. Made a tree stand and shot the heck out of those bales at various yardages. To this day we still call this area the bear woods. String trackers were the deal for awhile. I know some of you might remember them. Everyone said to use it on bear. Told their coats were thick coming out of hibernation and would absorb blood making tracking hard. Hunting evenings over bait. From 4 until dark. Its like nine to nine thirty to dark. Must have your bow unstrung or cased at sundown. This is creepy knowing Bear are out prowling. I got my bear on the first sit. We put up our own tree stands. The bear came in slow and very cautious. Then quartered away slightly. I drew and released. Bingo I hit the spot and let me tell you that bear covered some ground. String flying out of the container on my bow. It finally stopped and I heard what is called the death moan. Processer wanted the bear whole. It was that gall bladder he wanted thus making sure it wasn't disguarded. I got to start fishing lake of the woods from the bank. After Kevin got his bear we took a daily fly in to a remote lake. Flew into the lake in a beaver and picked up flying back in an otter. When we crossed the border going back we were asked what our business was in Canada. Told them and they said to park and bring in our export tag for the bears. I will have to say we both looked pretty rough, Kevin more than I. 🤣 So things got weird then. After looking at our export tag they wanted our wallets. Went through each pulling everything out. Gave each of us the stuff in a pile. Where were we born, country of origin. Many questions. Finally let us go. Felt creepy just trying to get back into America. These were our people making us feel this way.
  10. Peppered dove anyone? VID_20240902_141637108.mp4
  11. Speaking of being on can mean two things. Being on the proverbial "X" and hitting birds well. We had the best of both this morning. I literally loved having the best wing woman with me today. When I had my 15 she had 12 and I watched her finish up. I am really blessed. 🥰
  12. Peace my rear, those little feathered rockets can sometimes get the best of a good wing shot if they are not on.
  13. Great report Mr.Pitt thanks.
  14. Shot a bear in Ontario in the mid 80s with my recurve. Was a fun hunt. Like Glen said above it had been eating bacon grease and pastry items. We did like the meat but as stated by John above had to cook it well done to get rid of the possible trichinosis. I took the bear to be processed at a place in Nester Falls. The guy was mad because I had shot through the gall bladder. He had a side hustle selling the gall to a market where it was sent to the Orient for who knows what. I will try to find a picture to share and add more to the story later.
  15. Quick opener report. Really foggy here this morning. Hunted until approximately 9:15. Sun came out and it began to get pretty warm. Mrs. BilletHead and I scratched out 17 between us. As it is in dove hunting we should of hit more. Fun times with each other. Not sure about this afternoon. 91 now, most likely hit the field in the morning. These birds were in and out of a cut corn field. 90 percent were young birds raised local. Need cooler weather.
  16. We have a place and if nothing goes awry we will be there trying.
  17. We call them " The Powers that Be" .
  18. Be careful with what you say Jeff! 😁 Put fish in there somewhere.
  19. Yes, that permethrin is amazing stuff Anthony. I do the same during hunting season. Have watched ticks start crawling across treated clothing . They would start making circles and just flat die. My cousin used to spray a rag and wipe down his horse. It would kill the biggest meanest black horse flies. He read the percentage on that bottle then bought full strength and started mixing his own for the horse and his clothes. Said it was cheaper. It in fact was stronger than what is sold and recommended to use like you, and I do. Cousin Mike found out he had bladder cancer that had went all over his body. I can't say it was this product, but he did tinker with the mixture. He was a long-time chain smoker like in 55 years also. Who knows but I believe in this product used as recommended.
  20. Sad deal, sorry to hear that for you and your Son. Good luck to you both Oneshot.
  21. How is the son with the bad COPD doing?
