  1. This was a Piney goggle eye. We catch them around Martin Hollow in the James. We used to catch several in Schooner at night on bass jigs.
  2. I don’t usually fish on Saturday but the weather has been nasty. I met Jeff at Cape this morning. It was cold with freezing fog when we arrived. It soon lifted and the sun came out bright and shiny. We fished where they were located last trip…zip. We fished where they were trip before last…zip. So it became search and seizure. We found fish in places where they haven’t been in months. We also found fish in places that seldom give up anything. Jeff started out with Ned. I tried some jigs and Shaky worms but no bites. I was behind before I smartened up and started throwing the little guy. All of the fish came on it. We wound up with 16 bass and 1 goggle eye. 4 of the bass were keepers as was the goggle eye. We fished from 9-2. I saw water temps from 47° to 51°. The air was 31° at launch and 55° at load.
  3. Another nice trip. It is good to hear that the little guy is finally working again. That hasn’t been the case on this end. The worm and jig have been working instead. It looks like winter is going to get here next week. All I am seeing is windy and cold.
  4. Great outing. We only had 22 with 3 keepers on the other end. It looked like April at Cape. There were about 10 rigs there when we arrived. There were 21 when we left.
  5. My guess was 30 but there are a couple of Drury University students working on this and that is what they reported.
  6. Here is another factor for poor people who might need a short loan. In Springfield alone there are over 300 pay day loan places which can charge up to 76% interest.
  7. I believe that you are correct. The good starting wage around here seems to be about $15/hr. That’s about $30,000 grose many without any benefits. Take out rent, utilities, transportation, child care just to name a few items and there isn’t much left to take care of the rest. Add to that many have intellectual challenges and probably won’t progress much beyond entry level jobs it is easy to see needs that aren’t being met.

    Oh This Bad

So you gonna breed it or eat it.
  9. SOP
  10. We hunted them with Sheridans (which I still have). We hunted way back along country roads. Our dog was a 1/2 ton GMC.
  11. I seriously doubt it. Outside of a major depression or possibly a long term recession, have you seen major items go down in price? My current house is smaller than my first one and worth more than 10 times what I paid for the first one. As long as the buyers can get the credit they will still be out there. When I was in the business all what most of them wanted to know was how much is the payment with no concern for the interest rate or length of the loan.
  12. We used to find an occasional one with warble worms in it. That one got fed to the dogs.
  13. Sounds like a better day than I had. Good going.

    Eggs

Speaking of shallow, yesterday I was up in Flat Creek above Mash Hollow and the bend to the bridge. There were 2 boats on the shallow flat one appeared to be casting and the other spider rigging. With the lake down 4 feet that water has to be less than 10’ at the deepest part.
  15. I don’t know about OK but here inMO the conservation department has days where they provide fishing equipment for kids.
  16. I didn’t get home until second quarter. I left the bloodshed in the third quarter.

    Eggs

I don’t think so. They will be making eggs all winter long.

    Feral hogs

We did a modified free range where we fenced areas with woven wire and a barb on the bottom. Keeping the sows back was done with a piece of plywood with a hand hold cut out in the top center. Keeping the bottom on the ground was crucial. If the sow got her nose under it you were in trouble.

    Feral hogs

You guys who think you could drive them and shoot a bunch must not have spent much time around hogs and haven’t thought about the terrain in vast areas this state and Arkansas.

    Feral hogs

We have about 20 game cams scattered around the farm to learn the habits of the resident does and check the migration of bucks. We have only seen one feral hog. It was at night. It appeared to be a large boar. He looked to me to be in the 3-400 pound range. We later found a bottom barbed wire broken on a new fence. It about had to be that hog.

    Feral hogs

If my memory is correct hog gustation time is 3 months 3 weeks and 3 days with as many as a dozen piglets in the litter.
  22. When I hunted birds we would see them along river bottoms. I only ever shot one. I served it alongside quail. It must have been eating mud as 5 people tried it and there was timberdoodle left over.
  23. Thanks for the advice. I gave the glass bead a try. I can’t anchor it enough to keep it from getting to the outside and being exposed. So I went with 2 metal beads tied to the hook and had success. Now you won’t be able to say my jigs don’t have any cojones.
  24. So no ideas about glass beads in lead.
