I fished Lake St. Clair, Detroit river, and Erie all in the same tournament. You can fish all three in one day if you want. We did best where the Detroit River merged into Erie. The locals told us to find a spot along the trench where a freighter goes by and fish the eddy at the end of the rock dikes. When the freighters come by it stirs up the bottom and the smallmouth bite like crazy for 5 minutes after that. We used mostly spinnerbaits and tubes. Caught a couple of 5’s and the rest 4’s for the tourney…all smallmouth. We ended up getting 3rd in the tourney and won a boat when Alton Jones’s daughter drew our name out of a hat.

I went to a friends house for a 4th of July party. I pointed to the house in back of him that looked brand new. Anderson stickers still on the windows. I said wow they’re still building new houses in this subdivision? He said “No, they had to rebuild the house…it burnt down a year ago today. They left fireworks in the trash can in their garage. Insurance company had to put them in a lease property the whole time. Bet that cost the insurance company a pretty penny on the whole mess when it was all said and done.

The fishing in all rivers now starts sucking the closer to STL you get. A few big ones remain but my opinion is it’s going to continue to get like the area around Fenton. Probably in 20 years everything below Sullivan will suck and it will keep getting worse every year as you go upstream, unfortunately.

I purposely made all my lures on the softer side. The fish tend to hold on longer and have better action. But I agree they are soft like a Senko or a Bandito bug. It’s always a catch 22 of course. 🙂
