Had he caught it on a BPS catfish rod, 20# Trilene and a 2 treble it would be different.

Why? It would have been the same result. Isn't that what we're saying? That it doesn't matter how you get there, as long as you get there?

Then someone took it to another level and said he deserved "respect" for catching it. Sorry, but I have a different perspective on angling.

If you guys don't draw a distinction between tricking a fish and feeding a fish, why do you ever use anything but bait?

And that perspective is? . . . "catching fish on 6x with a hand-tied fly" - something that you have yet to accomplish yourself, but yet you hold it as your base standard for respect?? How rich!

One could argue that powerbait is no less of a "bait" than the Chompers or Senko's that I'm sure you pitch to smallies, right Eric? I mean, heck Powerbait resembles an egg, right? There's not many fly-fisherman that don't carry a few "fetal emergers" in their fly box, is there? Clearly Powerbait is not a real egg, and whether it is designed and manufactured to mimic an egg is debatable I guess. Oh, but its scented you say! But so are most Chompers and Senkos, or do you fish with exclusively the unscented variety just to make sure you are TRICKING the fish, and not FEEDING it.

I was thinking it might take a little less skill and patience with that rig.

I think Eric simply voiced a thought that almost everyone here had. But in this PC arena some are pretending to be absolutely appalled by it.

Lighten up for Pete's sake.

If I caught a state record using an "indicator", there's about 30 guys I'm aware of that would run me through the ringer, and rib me at every oppurtunity. I think he made a good point when he said...

How full of it are you, if you stand behind a curtain and redicule someone for saying out loud what you yourself think...or have thought ?

Nobody is taking anything away from the man that caught the record fish. But do we wish he had caught it stripping a PMS after dark at Rebar.......darn straight.

Depending on the time of year, how long to you think a true 5 pound smallie would be? 22 inches ?

GloryDaze starts the topic with a few questions.... It takes about 50 "posts" for him to learn 5 things.

Two of the five I'm sure he already knew and kudos to him for maintaining a sense of humor on the the third. So he learned two things at an average of about 25 posts each.

First thing on post #7 - Browns that big are nearing the end of their life cycle

Second thing on post #29 - Lots a little bows are glad he's gone to the crystal clear stream of hookless lures in the sky

The rest of the thread is simply people arguing over the internet... Which is in my opinion futile (because you can't hear their voice or see their face) but at the same time it has been highly entertaining.

So GloryDaze, sorry it took so long to get some answers, but thanks for letting me watch a bunch of grown men get their panties in a wad over a fish, or was it about the fish? Sheesh!!!

and I'd be ashamed if Scott ever read this....

They're good points CWF, and the difference between a glo ball and a ball of Powerbait is not drastic. But they are different. Yes, I use Senkos, and yes they are scented and salted. But I'm not convinced the scent makes any difference. It looks like a creature that lives in the water and that's why they eat it. You can make the argument that Powerbait looks like an egg, but if it was no more effective than a glo ball, why would anyone use Powerbait? It clearly has advantages, and for me, they are advantages I'm not comfortable using. I think you're being intellectually dishonest to pretend there's no difference.

If you don't see the difference between catching fish on bait and a fly or lure, then that's your perspective and prerogative to do so. If that works for you and you feel the same satisfaction taking a fish on either method, good for you. Like GloryDaze said, it's in the eye of the beholder.

But yes, my base standard for respect when it comes to trout fishing is to take a fish on artificial lures. Whether it be a fly or a plug, or on a fly rod or spinning rod...there's room in my head for debate. Tying your own flies is not a prerequisite to me, but I think it would make the accomplishment more satisfying. Using a fly rod is not a prerequisite for me, but I think it makes the experience more fun. But that's just my take on it. There's no right or wrong here...it's just a matter of how you look at the sport. To me, the point is to trick the fish into thinking it's eating something that lives in the water, to stimulate its instinctual predatory senses, not to put a tasty, aromatic morsel of food in front of its face and wait for it to inhale it. It's not catfishing.

Yes, I'm a fledgling fly fisherman, but I don't see how that's relevant to my perspective on valuation of method. I'm positive I would catch more smallmouth if I took a bucket of shiners or crawdad's in the canoe, but that's not satisfying to me.

I've always liked this story..

http://www.whiteriver.net/northfork/manleys.htm

Record fish usually dont come to those who want them the most. And thats a good thing...I also see no reason to knock any of the folks who have been unfortunate enough to catch one...Seems that somebody will always find fault with your catch, or fault you for taking it home...Plain Silliness, IMO. Life gets a heck of alot easier if you dont take it to seriously..Quit trying to find fault, and be glad for other folks when good things happen to them. Cheers.
