dennis boatman Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 First let me say that I am not calling any one person out, or implying that some aren't always correct in there reports. With that said, i have read many many reports of the total number of fish caught on a specific fishing trip. Reports of 40, 50, 60, or even up to 100 fish per day are sometimes reported. So, let's say you fish for 10 hours, that could be up to 10 fish per hour equalling 100 fish for that day. Absolutely an obtainable amount of fish to catch, but even at that rate that's a fish every 6 minutes without ever taking a break for a snack or moving a boat, or tying on a new fly, ( which I can never catch more than 4 or 5 on without having to retie). I have fished for nearly 50 years, with many other fisherman also, and I honestly cannot ever think of a day where I/we caught 100 fish in a day. And it's not just this forum, but on others I am on accross the country. Now granted, I usually only fish for 5 or 6 hours but a 10 or 15 fish day is one great day on the water, be it wading in a river or on the lake. Keep fishing, keep catching, and keep reporting. A strike indicator is just a bobber...
OzarkFishman Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 At many farm ponds, I can catch 100 bass in as little as 6 or 7 hours (do the math, I get tired). It helps if I am doubling up with a donkey rig, but very obtainable (but not very enjoyable, I take more breaks these days). Panfish are similar. As for PUBLIC water for bass or trout, many quit counting and just guesstimate (I am not good enough to do that, I count every one of them).
Ham Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I caught 116 last creek trip. I would have caught more, but I got a late start and then ran out of daylight. I had a lot of other chances too miissed strikes and lost fish that pulled off. I could easily catch 200 panfish on a flyrod in a day. EASY. I keep track with a mechanical counter. I only count them if I bring them to hand. I don't bring it up because I am only keeping track for myself. 100 trout in a day with a flyrod would be tough for me. I lose a lot of fish because of the barbless thing and I lose time re-rigging tippit etc. I think the best I've done on trout with a flyrod in a day was 78. id10t Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I am not sure about others but I have had days where I have caught 50+ fish. Had a day this spring on Crooked Creek that I caught 56 Smallmouth. A typical day for me is getting on the water at just after daylight and getting off the water at dark. One of the rivers I fish has a 9 mile float that takes me 12 hours or so to float when I fish it hard. Thats about 3/4 of a mile per hour. If a hole is producing its nothing to paddle back up and fish it again. If its a riffle and I am wading it I take all the time I need. I am in no hurry to get to the take out. If its water I have never been on it can take longer. In a typical day I don't have to retie but 5 or 6 times at most. I use 6lb fireline cyrstal with a 6lb floro leader and only tend to break off when I hang up and don't want to fight getting back to where I am hung up. I cant speak for lake fisherman but as a river guy 4.5 fish an hour is or can be common. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of days that it is quality over quantity and I have only caught a few fish in a day. Seems the older I get the less that happens.

Gavin Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Depends on were you fish, how long you fish, and if the fish are cooperating. I'm sure that its possible to catch a hundred a day...but I'm not a counter, and I dont understand the counter mentallity. Why care about numbers of un-memorable fish? If their on the prod...swing for the fences and go for a big one.
Ham Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 To each his own. I've caught lots of memorable fish some real large and others special to me for other reasons. I keep up with numbers to compare one year to the next and to as another excuse to make additional trips. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
ollie Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I dunno, after 20-30 I just loose count or get to drunk to remember!! Like others have said, it is easy to catch those numbers, but for me to have those numbers I am catching a lot of dinks thrown in the mix. I just don't like counting those. 97procraft Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I would assume that the 100 fish days are with more than one angler, but I was on a trout trip in January last year with two other friends and one of the guys caught 66 fish over the two days (most were stockers). That was only about 12 hours of total fishing. If we all were counting, I am sure our total would have been in the upper 60's or even 70's each day, 120-140 fish total. And this is from three guys who only fish Tanney once or twice a year. And as far as not trusting the reports, you should only believe what you want. Some fishermen lie.
stlfisher Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I have never had a 100 fish day , but I have had a few 40-50 fish day's for trout....that is all day fishing. If you spend all day on the water and the fish are really biting 100 seems possible, but I am sure not as common as might be reported. i don't keep an exact count either...just a guestimate. Usually if i am catching fish I eventually switch it up...see if something else might work or see if I catch a bigger one.
